ThinkPad T14 fails with critical Chipset update

2020-12-30, 3:40 AM

Lenovo Vantage prompts me with critical update AMD IO Driver (Windows 10 Version 1903 or Later) - 10 [64].

Upon installation, it is reported as successfully installed and shows up in the history. However, every time I check for updates in Lenovo Vantage, the same driver shows up again. I've tried to update multiple times, including manual update from the Lenovo support page. Every time it says successfully installed, but the update still shows up in Lenovo Vantage.

Looking in Device Manager, AMD Micro PEP Device seems to be missing, while the other drivers included in this update are installed with their correct corresponding versions.

What is the purpose of AMD Micro PEP Device? How critical is this update?

ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 AMD - 20UD

Bios 1.29

hello

vantage will checks AMD GPIO,AMD PSP,AMD SMBus,AMD PEP,AMD I2C. if one of them can't be find or not installed, this package will display repeatly.

so we will change this detect logic by remove PEP checking, it needs about 5 work days. sorry for the trouble.

by the way PEP device missing is normal behavior, PEP shows in win 10 mode, when under Linux mode, it's not visable, you can also set sleep state as "win 10" to resolve it.

F1 boot into BIOS: Config->Power->sleep state: win10

Hi spandauer,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Seeing as the driver shows that it is installed successfully, this could well just be a Lenovo Vantage(Software) driver detection problem. To verify this, please head over to Device manager, then expand "System Devices" , check for anything related to chipset (i.e: Chipset Controller, Chipset Family). Right click the device and select "properties" , then head to the drivers tab. See if the Driver date corresponds with the time you did the update and if the version is similar. If everything seems to be in order, then the driver installed successfully and the problem lies with Lenovo Vantage.

Lenovo Vantage problems like this will get fixed over time.

Regards

Voithos

Re:ThinkPad T14 fails with critical Chipset update

Hello, Thank you both for your prompt replies.

I have tried to install r1bch07w.exe manually. It says "successfully installed" but there is still no AMD Micro PEP Device in Device Manager, and the update is still showing up in Lenovo Vantage. I doubt this is a Vantage bug, since there is no PEP device in Device Manager.

I am attaching screenshots of Device Manager with "Security devices" and "System devices" expanded, and the relevant drivers highlighted. I have checked all the highlighted drivers, and the version numbers correspond to what is specified in the readme file, but the date is not. I think this is expected though; there are other devices with driver dates of 2018 and even 2006, so I believe "driver date" is the release date of the driver and not the install date. However, "AMD micro PEP Device" is still missing.

Does anyone know what "AMD micro PEP Device" actually is? This would help me troubleshoot if there is indeed any issues due to this failed update. I might add that I have an issue with a loose part inside the machine that is audible when turning or lightly shaking it. It went to a Lenovo service center, but came back in even worse shape (the loose part is still there, a protective Mylar film had been ripped off, and the fan is now whining). Don't know if this could be related, since I don't know what a PEP device is or where it is located.

Thanks!

Re:ThinkPad T14 fails with critical Chipset update

Hi, I have the exact same issue with a recurring AMD IO Driver update in Vantage even though it has already been installed. However, when checking the corresponding driver versions in Device Manager, the versions are as advertised in the description (copied from Vantage):

2.2.0.130(AMD GPIO)
4.11.0.0(AMD PSP)
5.12.0.38(AMD SMBus)
1.0.27.0(AMD PEP)
1.2.0.102(AMD I2C)

Still, the "AMD micro PEP device" remains somewhat mysterious, but I have no reason to doubt that it will be in order, too. I saw on a website that it might have something to do with tuning clock speeds (?)

Therefore I think that this is purely a problem of Lenovo Vantage.

Best regards Jens

Thanks for your input, Jens!

That are the same driver versions I have in my Device Manager, except the missing AMD micro PEP device. Do you actually find AMD micro PEP device in your device manager, despite recurring update prompts, or is it missing also for you?

Re:ThinkPad T14 fails with critical Chipset update

Hi, and no, I did not find the AMD micro PEP device in device manager. Which I personally would not worry too much about. But this might actually be the reason why the update shows over and over again in Vantage. Apparently (?) this driver fails to install every time and leads to the constant recurrence of the update. So this might not be a Vantage issue after all, as you suspected. But of course this is only guesswork.

Best regards, Jens
