ThinkPad T440s - My first impressions

2014-01-15, 20:30 PM

Here are my first impressions on the T440s which I have just switched over to.  Mine is an i7-4600U with the Full HD MultiTouch screen, 12GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD.  This was a CTO configured model since no TopSeller units were available with the 512GB SSD.  I bought a couple other TopSeller T440s units at the same time that had a slightly lower spec.

My previous computer was a ThinkPad T420s.

I work a lot using a Lenovo docking station with dual monitors on both the T440s and my previous T420s.

Here are some of my thoughts on the T440s:

  • The screen is so much better than the T420s (and T430s which I avoided largely because of the display).  It even tops the T410s (except in aspect ratio).  I would sure love to see 1920x1200 in a laptop screen...
  • Touch screen in Windows 8.1 is so far less important than I thought it would be, but I expect that will change as I wade into Modern UI apps down the road.
  • This computer is very, very fast.  Installing Windows 8 Enterprise and apps was sooooo fast.  Windows loads so fast after pressing power, to get to UEFI BIOS or vPro configuration, I had to do them off restarts instead of cold boots.
  • The new material for the surface looks similar, but shows marks, especially oil from fingers much easier.  I prefer the rubberized coating of before.
  • I don't prefer the flipped logos on the top lid, because I look at my computer docked most of the time.  The result now is the logos are upside down to me all day long.
  • I like the new keyboard typing-wise, but it shows oil/grease easily.  The backlit keys work well enough in the dark; I am not sure if I prefer backlit keys or the ThinkLight of previous generations.  Having both options (like the 30-series ThinkPads) may have been the best.
  • The trackpoint with buttons integrated on the trackpad works fine, but the trackpad is so improved that I find myself using that most of the time.  Before I was a faithful trackpoint user and always avoided the trackpad.
  • The travel of the trackpad could be less, and it could have a quieter sound.  The trackpad on my CTO model made so much noise (a "clunking" noise), I got it replaced under warranty.  So my brand new laptop has already been fully disassembled, and I no longer have the i7 and Ultrabook stickers on my palm rest.
  • The speakers on the underside sound significantly worse than the T420s.  I don't use the laptop for much sound (and when I do, it is for Skype with a headset), so this isn't a big dea for me.  The T420s speakers were loud and clear while the laptop was docked on my desk though, but now the sound is very muffled when docked on my desk.
  • The fingerprint reader support and Windows 8.1 work great together.  When working undocked, I love how much time I save logging on, doing UAC elevation, and even logging into the LastPass password manager software I use.  It makes me want a fingerprint reader on my desktop keyboard.

Serviceability/upgrade notes:

  • Adding RAM or a hard drive is no longer a two minute job.  The bottom cover on the T440s is very difficult to remove, and the Lenovo instructions are only semi-helpful.  If you plan to add RAM yourself, buy a "spudger" tool or two online (primarily sold as iPhone/iPad repair tools), as this makes it much easier.
  • Many parts are tied together.  For example, the defective trackpad came as one part with the whole top cover, because the trackpad is difficult to remove and install onto the top cover (very delicate wires).  So anything beyond a hard drive, RAM, or wireless card means very serious "surgery" for your laptop.
  • The Lenovo tech commented while there is little room to spare anywhere inside the laptop, the design/layout of the interior is very well thought out.  My T440s was the first 40-series ThinkPad he had worked on, but he had little trouble getting it all apart and put back together.

How would I tell which display I have (without any dis-assembly)?

According to that, I have the AUO screen (B140HAN).  I really like the display.

I don't think I mentioned my machine type before.  It is CTO model, 20AQCTO1WW.

There is different modells in different countries.

Your modell is exact what I'm looking for.

Do you have an URL to the store?

CTO is a custom order model.  This is available through Lenovo in Canada and the USA, but I am not sure about other countries.
