ThinkPad T440s + Ultra Dock problems

2014-01-15, 20:03 PM

I have just rolled out 3 x ThinkPad T440s laptops with Ultra Docks running 2 x 24" monitors via DisplayPort connected to them.  These are the first 40-series ThinkPads I have implemented, and these are also our first systems running Windows 8/8.1; everything else runs Windows 7.  We run Windows Enterprise, so the laptops have a clean image installed by me.

THE ISSUE:

The laptops work great on their own.  The experience with the Ultra Docks is far from perfect right now though.  On all three PCs, shutting down or restarting the PC while docked causes the computer to either hang at a black screen or get stuck when the Lenovo logo: the little circle balls to indicate Windows is loading never come up.  The only fix for this is to hold down power to shut off the laptop, and then undock and redock the laptop.  It is ridiculous a computer cannot restart successfully on the dock.  I assume firmware can fix this?

I also have an issue with our existing Bluetooth keyboards and mice not being recognized all the time on startup - most of the time we have to manually reconnect them on boot.  However, at this point I think that is a Windows 8.1 or Logitech problem.

Other than that, quite happy with the ThinkPad T440s (and Windows 8.1).

The firmware for the DisplayPort hub in the dock needs to be updated - a formal tip is being released and should be available on the support site shortly.

If the display on an external monitor connected to a ThinkPad Pro Dock or a ThinkPad Ultra dock is flickering or going blank, download the firmware (fwdphb01.exe) from the following URL:

http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/options/fwdphb01.exe

Downloading:

  1. A window will pop up asking you to Run or Save the file.  Select Save.
  2. Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and select Save.  A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete.  Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.
  3. Make sure to be logged on with an Administrator account.
  4. Make sure your system is docked to the ThinkPad Pro Dock or Ultra Dock with at least one external monitor connected.

Installing file:

  1. Close all applications.
  2. Double click the downloaded file:  fwdphb01.exe
  3. It will display the current firmware version and the firmware version to be installed.
  4. If the current firmware version on your dock is older than 2.17.000, then click the Update firmware button.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete installation and restart the dock with following action:
  • Shutdown the system, unplug the AC adapter from the dock, and wait for 5 seconds.  Then, re-attach the AC adapter and power on.

6.  If your docking station already updated, then click the Cancel Update button to exit.

Re: ThinkPad T440s + Ultra Dock problems

FURTHER ISSUE:

I think others have reported similar issues to this with the new docks and 40-series ThinkPads...

We use Dell UltraSharp U2412M monitors which are 1920x1200 resolution.  All the monitors are connected by DisplayPort and are detected as being Dell monitors by Windows.

One of the ThinkPad T440s' went to sleep on the dock while the user was at lunch.  The user returned from lunch and woke it up.  One of the monitors was detected as a "Generic Plug and Play" monitor and was set to 800x600 resolution.  It was not possible to set the resolution back to 1920x1200, but a restart fixed the issue.

A POSSIBLE FURTHER ISSUE:

This same laptop successfully restarted on the dock.  But upon logging into Windows 8.1 Enterprise, the local network shares failed to load, suggesting a network connectivity issue.  Not sure if this is dock-related or not, or if it is just a Windows 8.1 Enterprise issue.

*BUMP*

Can anyone help?

If I want to open a case with Lenovo technical support on this, how do I go about doing so?  This is a dock problem, not a problem with the laptops themselves.

A further issue:

One monitor went black today and doesn't display anything.  The monitor acts like it has a signal though (no "no signal" screen saver), and Windows sees it has two displays connected, so Windows open on a screen that can't be seen.

You may want to check this other thread:

and post your problem there. It seems the same as yours - many ppl having the same issue.

I have the same issue as described here.  I have to use the dock power button to shutdown my T440s.  I also have two monitors connected to the ultra dock via HDMI and DVI which repeatedly black out from time to time which eventually come back. I have seen others here suffering with this as well.  Really hoping for a solution from Lenovo soon on this or will likely return the dock for a refund.

I have the T440p and am experiencing the same problem.  Microsoft came out with a Hotfix that seemed to address this problem which is caused by Laptop trying to go to sleep and not waking again.  I installed but no help for me.  The link is:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=2877999

I have tried everything to intensify power usage and keep laptop from going to sleep; yet it keeps going to sleep.  I am begining to wonder if it is a power issue as the T440p shipped with a 20watt 6.75 amp power adapter and the Ultra dock ships with a 20watt 4.5 amp power adapter and the dock is rated for 20W - 4.5A.

My T-440p is operating in Windows 7-64bit.  The multiscreen going blank has now not happened for 1 week.  The upgrade to the finder print driver seems to have been the problem; go figure!  The link is found in the t-440p forum.
