Re: ThinkPad T440s + Ultra Dock problems

2014-02-05, 14:43 PM
Hi, would you mind posting the link to the post with the solution? I found this other long thread:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T540p-T440p-UltraDock-external-display-issues/td-p/1368847/page/12

However nobody seems to have found a solution there.

Also, my laptop doesn't even have a fingerprint reader to begin with.

If your system has fingerprint, this may be the cause:

Credit goes to: Someotherguy who is designated as being on Lenovo staff.

The forum was my T440 does not wake up.  Seems counter intuitive but my laptop has not experinced the dual-moniors running from the ultra-dock going blank since I updated the fingerprint driver.

My T440p has the finger print reader, and operates on the Win7-64 bit.

garywi,

It sounds like there may be multiple symptoms being described in this thread.  I believe there is a firmware update coming for the dock which should address the video dropping out issue - I've posted an update in another thread.

All,

We will continue to provide feedback on these other symptoms and it may be helpful to see which (if any) remain after the firmware update, once available.

Thanks

Mark

The firmware for the DisplayPort hub in the dock needs to be updated - a formal tip is being released and should be available on the support site shortly.

If the display on an external monitor connected to a ThinkPad Pro Dock or a ThinkPad Ultra dock is flickering or going blank, download the firmware (fwdphb01.exe) from the following URL:

http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/options/fwdphb01.exe

Downloading:

  1. A window will pop up asking you to Run or Save the file.  Select Save.
  2. Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and select Save.  A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete.  Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.
  3. Make sure to be logged on with an Administrator account.
  4. Make sure your system is docked to the ThinkPad Pro Dock or Ultra Dock with at least one external monitor connected.

Installing file:

  1. Close all applications.
  2. Double click the downloaded file:  fwdphb01.exe
  3. It will display the current firmware version and the firmware version to be installed.
  4. If the current firmware version on your dock is older than 2.17.000, then click the Update firmware button.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete installation and restart the dock with following action:
  • Shutdown the system, unplug the AC adapter from the dock, and wait for 5 seconds.  Then, re-attach the AC adapter and power on.

6.  If your docking station already updated, then click the Cancel Update button to exit.

I was holding off on purchasing a docking station until all problems were resolved. Mark, would you say that this is now the case and it would be safe to purchase one?

Frakncylons,

At this point I would believe we probably have docks with different firmware levels and I can't promise that if you order today that you get one with uplevel firmware.

What I would suggest is that you give this a few more days and let existing customers update the firmware and see if they confirm the problem is solved.   Assuming so, you can order and hopefully get an updated dock, but worst case, you can update easily.

Best regards,

Mark

My T440s has been docked in my UltraDock for several hours now and the monitors blacking out issue has not reoccurred since updating to this new firmware.  Thanks for getting this resolved!  It was a very annoying issue.

Re: ThinkPad T440s + Ultra Dock problems

Hi - I ordered a T440s (I7, 8gb, 256gb ssd, touchscreen) and I truly hope the issues regarding the system I have been reading about have been resolved. Honestly I am a tad nervous but I am taking a wait and see attitude. The system is supposedly arriving on 3/24. Anyway, have the issues with the Ultra Dock been resolved? From what I can tell this seems to be more of a design/manufacturing issue with the dock itself. I state this because, again from what I have read, the dock connectors don't line up properly. I don't buy in to the 'static' problem and why else would there be a kit released to essentially adjust the connector alignment. Just my opinion.

Any users out there that have purchased a ultra dock recently (last 30 days) and it is successfully being used with the T440s?

Thanks in advance for replies.

Re: ThinkPad T440s + Ultra Dock problems

It looks as if the Ultra Dock issues have been resolved with a firmware update. Can someone else verify their dock issues have been fixed with the firmware update? I only see a single positive entry which almost a month ago.

Now the question is who to order it from. I would presume that if it was ordered from Amazon, Newegg etc the dock would have the old firmware and need an update.

I ordered from amazon and had the flicker issue just one time. I updated the firmware and have not had a problem since.
