ThinkPad T470s - 20HG - battery swollen (internal)

2018-12-05, 16:09 PM

We have had 4x ThinkPad T470s internal battery which have all swollen in the laptop.

ASM P/N: SB10J9003

FRU P/N: 01AV406

Rechargeable Li-ion Battery NON 11.46V - 2.274Ah/27Wh

Really is alarming as the machine has been in the environment for around 14 months.

This is a real health and safety risk.

4x as in more than forty units?

I would contact lenovo service ask for a manager and open a support case.

That's crazy bad.

We have raised a support case and all we get told is battery is out of warantee (1 year) and pay £180 for new battery.

Lenovo not taking this serious. Does there need to be a incident for this to be taken serious?

Can you post a couple of pictures here?

I would think that GB's equal to the USA's  FAA (our public aviation safety board)

might be interested in a problem that is apparently as widespread as this one?

In my humble opinion, that is totally unacceptable in a battery not even 2 years old.

I agree it presents a safety risk. If you have a bit of time on your hands I would report it.

There have been enough "smoking / flaming" battery issues lately that I would have thought Lenovo would have engaged you in an assertive manner to get to the bottom of the issue. If your company bought them all at the same time it's likely the batteries were all from the same source & lot ... perhaps a mfg. defect was present in the mfg. process...

All,

If you haven't already, please contact support at your soonest opportunity to report what you are experiencing / seeing regardless of whether or not the system is in warranty or not.

Andy:

Thanks for being active in this thread.

From Message #3 of this thread,
it appears Lenovo tech. support was contacted and didn't seem to want to engage on the bigger issue.

Same here, T470s stopped charging second battery after about 20 month of use. When contacting the support via our dealer I've been told that batteries are not within the warrenty and they could provide a spare part about 60 % above the after market price.

Obviously not all Lenovo employees are aware of the danger a customer with a defect Li-Ion battery can face. I read there have been a number of recalls on batteries from Lenovo in the past so I really think the support should be interrested in getting more informations on such cases.
