ThinkPad T510 Low volume

2013-12-28, 17:34 PM

I bought a T510 few days ago and was surprised to see this machine has ridiculously low volume. I have tried everything including the tweaks in Smart audio and removing audio limiter but still the volume is very low. On my dell 1525, I never go past 40% volume on my headphones but on T51o, I am using 90-100% volume to watch videos on live streaming websites.

Is there any solution to boost the volume on T510? My system is with windows 7 ultimate (64-bit) and audio device is Conexant 20585.

This problem was on both headphones and speakers. I guess it has something to do with driver or smart audio. I tried  DFX Audio Enhancer today. DFX disables smartaudio and takes over the function. There was a noticeable difference in sound quality and volume. Funny thing I observed that windows sounds were very loud but the music volume (VLC and WM Player) was still not up to the mark. While playing music (windows volume at 50% and vlc at 100%), music should have been louder than the warning sounds of opening and closing My Computer tabs but I still could feel that music volume was weak.

The 510 is notoriously known for hideous audio but the latest gen Realtek drivers really do help.  Uninstall the driver you have, go download and install the latest 2.73 version, here.

I installed RealTek driver after uninstalling the original conexant 20585 driver. Sound card showed up in device manager as HD Audio Device. But with Smart Audio gone from ontrol Panel, The pathetic volume of conexant further decreased by 30-40%. So this driver either didnt install right or it simply is not working. Volume of this laptop is really a joke by lenovo.

Odd and it must be frustrating.  You must have reminant drivers in conflict.  Run Double Driver and check what audio drivers are installed.  Did you install the Win7 Ultimate fresh...or was it a clone or image?

I am running Windows 7 64-bit with Service Pack 1 and all the updates. I installed this one fresh after changing my HDD last week. Driver version is Conexant 20585 HD ver. 3.66.147.0/4.95.48.50. Today I tried Dolby Home Theatre and there was 5-10% improvement. But this is still very low compared to my other laptop.

Hi,

Connect your headphones and go to: control panel > SmartAudio > click on headphones picture under the SmartAudio logo and press "accept". It turns off headphones volume limiter.

Hope it helps

Regards,

Lordiik

Headphones limiter is already turned off. Volume increases a bit with the limiter off but then it starts to increase and decrease on its own. There must be some kind of standalone application to amplify the volume of computer. Another thing that I have noticed that VLC 2.1.2 has a lower but very clear sound on my computer. This version of VLC Player increases the volume up until 100% and after that the volume bar goes to 200% but volume doesnt increase. I downgraded VLC to 2.0.7. The volume keeps increasing after 100% but sound starts to distort. And the preamp function doesnt work on both VLC versions as well as KM Player.

Did you try disabling all enhancements in Sound?

It's also known that the output power of the Conexant is just really weak for some reason.

Yes. I disabled all enhancements. No difference was observed. Today I tried a Cheap USB sound Card and the quality of sound created by that Sound Card made me appreciate the Conexant. :)
