Thinkpad A485 - Bios 1.05 worsens throttling further

2018-10-17, 19:41 PM

I just updated the Bios on my machine hoping for the performance to start going further to becoming at least on par with the E485/E585, but to my horror, it now throttles even worse! What used to be a stable 2.5Ghz on the CPU during a Cinebench run on high performance mode, resulting in an underwhelming but acceptable 530-560cb is now 2.0Ghz! This barely puts it in the 450-480cb range, which is almost as bad as quiet mode on the previous bios. This is completely unacceptable. If the E485/E585 can get 600cb consistently, so can the A485. The cooling isn't the problem, just stop limitting the laptop and let it get a little louder/hotter so we can get the performance we have been advertised! 70 degrees is _not_ a suitable temp limit in high performance mode.

Please try and fix this. This could be the best Ryzen laptop around, but right now, you're just a fool for buying this over the E485.

Here's a look at my findings https://imgur.com/a/qXJS2Bs

I am encountering the same issue; my Cinebench scores dropped by almost a full 150 points. Lenovo, clearly something is wrong with your power management here.

Same problem here. We were expecting that new BIOS will fix power controls, not break them even further. Please allow USER to set reasonable TDP and T-Skin (STAPM) wattage in BIOS menu, and not force the power settings on us customers, we paid hefty money for our laptops. This notebook is artificially limited by its questionable UEFI implementation.

Same issues here.

I really like this laptop, but with this horrible power management I will not recommend it to anyone.

Hoping for a better BIOS still.

I can confirm Bios 1.05 fixed the keyboard issue but worsens the throttling on AC.

Please provide the same support as the E485 has been given to rectify the same issues.

I have the 2700u version of the a485 with the 1.05 bios. Running on the Lenovo high performance mode (Fn+Q). I had to reboot while keeping the AC plugged in to get higher Cinebench scores (589/594/588cb , 39/40/39fps). Unplugging the power while it's on negatively impacts the performance until the next reboot.

If I start on battery and then plug in the AC power, 2 out of the 4 cores sit around 1.5ghz and I get around 480cb on Cinebench. If I run Cinebench while only on battery, all cores sit close to 3ghz and I get around 520cb

Hopefully, this power state bug is something that Lenovo can fix in the next bios update.

C'mon Lenovo, fix already this issue. This is the only thing that prevents me to buy this machine. And since I will buy only this from you (AMD, T/A series), this is a lost sale for you.

Why is Lenovo doing this? If this is the case, then don't release such updates at all or atleast allow Restore to an earlier point in time. Because that is not helping either.

After  Bios 1.05 my Cinebench scores dropped about 120 points.

Please fix this; I am extremely disappointed. I am an AMD fan but you are forcing me to switch to intel T series..really? Especially after the price that you listed for A series is similar to the T-series?

It truly does just make me wish I had saved for a T480 w/mx150 setup. If only you could actually configure it with an i5 in the UK.

Lenovo, please fix this.
