Re: Thinkpad A485 - Bios 1.05 worsens throttling further

It looks like the AMD AGESA has been updated in 1.22. I believe it was 1.0.0.4 before and now it's 1.1.0.6 so that's why there might be a performance improvement in certain scenarios .

Bad battery life aside, my laptop is pretty much idling at 60 to 70 deg doing some really light web browsing and office work.

How is that normal?

Anyone encountered issue with google chrome randomly flashes and reload everything?

New bios posted today (7/17)  - v1.24 . Beware, this lowered the performance of my a485 w/ 2700u . Ran some Cinebench numbers for the people still following this.

On v1.22 before update,

all core clocks fluctuate between 2.7~3.0ghz -- Cinebench r20 runs: 1355 , 1317 , 1376

On new v1.24,

all core clocks fluctuate between 2.4~2.6ghz -- Cinebench r20 runs: 1220 , 1241

Reverting back to v1.22,

all core clocks fluctuate between 2.7~3.0ghz -- Cinebench r20 runs: 1345 , 1326 , 1356

By chance did you also do a bios reset after the update? For whatever reason, these machines have odd thermal profiling after updates unless you reset bios to defaults.

Yes, I did reset the bios settings to default after updating to the new version.

how bout thermals and battery life? did any testing on it?

I kinda value that over raw performance from these laptop. Mine had the same chip with the upgrade 66Wh secondary battery still only managed to get a day of use out of this laptop.. thats a whopping 90+ wh battery in total.

Ya 1.24 dogs, AND still suffers from 70c thermal STRANGULATION

I also got a chance to look at the T495 and X395, they also get MURDERED at 70c, why lenovo is screwing over customers and themselves I will never know, no competitors I know of do this and they even made the change on the E4/595 to 85c

Come on Lenovo, 80c at least for crying out loud... meaning if it does ANYTHING your doomed...

Hi, I have the exact same issue on my T495. Has this ever been fixed? Lenovo support just seems to have started ignoring my Emails rather than helping me.

No....

A485 and MAYBE T495 (havent checked but only generational difference)

Latest 1.28 update lists:

2.Follow AMD request Set the VDDOFF voltage to 400mV in AGESA PCD option.

So depending on if Lenovo had it higher or lower then AMD specs, then we either now have LOWER performance/thermals, or HIGHER thermals (notice I didnt say performance, thats becasuse it will hit 70c faster and throttle to all hell as it did prior)

At this point, thermal throttling issue, battery switchover issue (when it drops from one battery to the other and your lappy shuts down, maybe people posted, most didnt even know what it was, lenovo support worthless, happens to probably all dual battery laptops as posters are from a few generations and both amd/intel), why the heck even have a "high performance" option in Lenovo's tools... it is literally a JOKE

New laptop ordered from Black Friday sales, this one is going up on Craigslist sometime soon (TM)

Oh man, this is really disappointing. I have issues with two locked cores but also the quality of the laptop itself is not as good as I had expected. I could also sell it but that does not really solve the issue I would just pass it on to some other innocent guy that then would have to deal with it.

Maybe everyone with these laptops should somehow try to get organised like people do when Apple screws things up? Idk.
