Thinkpad T420 USB 3.0 express card freezes system every 2 seconds

2012-08-06, 12:09 PM

Hi all,

my T420 (4180-MNG, Win 7, 32bit) doesn't have a USB3.0 on board so I bought a USB3.0 express card a while back, as I have an external USB3.0 HDD.

In most cases when I put it in, the system slows down emidiately!

It's like if the whole system becomes frozen ever 2 seconds, which basically means I can't work with it any more. You can see this through the mouse: you can move it for a second and then you can't for another 2 seconds. Any action which normally happens within seconds, now takes minutes.

Removing the Card solves the issue emidiately.

In some cases, I don't know why, it works, but most cases it doesn't.

First I tried the i-tec express card (EX1USB3) and last week I bought a logilink card (PC0056)

Both have the same issue. Both came with their own driver CD, which I of course also used. (tried it once w/o and it took windows update 30 min to find 1 driver. the other one he never found)

I tried windows fix it, re-install drivers multiple times, check and update Lenovo drivers, but nothing really helps.

There is no difference in putting the Card in the slot alone or in combination with my HDD (I've got 2 Western Digital USB3.0 HDD, no difference), so I have to assume it's really something with the express card HW / SW side.

Any good ideas somebody?

tnx

Hello pancho1005,

I can understand this must be aggravating for you, but we are here to help solve your issue.

If you can try installing the USB 3.0 driver from here:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS015025

Also, in some cases the power manager software also plays a significant role in other devices. Please, also install the Power Manager update from here:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS014939

If you do not have this on your computer, you can download it from here:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS014924

Hope this helps,

Alex

Re: Thinkpad T420 USB 3.0 express card freezes system every 2 seconds

Hi Alex,

many thanks for the quick answer.

The USB 3.0 driver solved the frozen issue with i-tec card, but now I receive a pop up when I insert the card, indicating that this item can work faster when put into a USB3.0 connection (this is w/o attaching anything to the express card, Eg. HDD)

A. What should I do now?

I also tried to update the power manager driver through the link (SW v1.65.05.21), but it indicated that already a newer version was available on the laptop.

B. can that be the case?

The last link you indicated is the power manager program, which I already have. v6.32.

C. Should I change any settings to improve the express card function?

The Logilink card is still having the issue. Probably because it uses a different driver then the i-tec (which uses the Renaissance driver, the same as your USB3.0 driver).

D. What can additionally be done here to make it work?

Tnx again!!

Hello pancho1005,

I do apologize for the time lapse,

A) What is said when you have something connected to the card when you insert it?

B) Uninstall the version you have on your computer currently, the newest drivers are all on the support site, which is from my link above. More than likely the version you have installed might be from another model on the same series as your computer. I have seen a couple of cases like this.

C) Do the same with the Power Manager. We will make sure you have a fresh install of these drivers on your computer.

D) The type of driver won't have much of an impact. What issues is it still giving you?

I hope this helps,

Alex

I also would like to see and complete update on what definitely supports a compatible USB 3.0 card in the T520 Express slot and whether USB 3.0 speeds will be achieved. Currently I am using eSATA for my high speed transfers but do have a recently purchased external USB 3.0 chassis once good cost effective cards are available. I may take the plunge.

I don't want to go into the driver hell of trying aimlessly. Hence and update on minimum drivers that work would go a long way for everything that will eventually go down that road.

Try disabling "PCI Express Power Management" in BIOS. Solved the problem with my T420 and a Renesas USB 3.0 card. Battery runtime is not noticeably shorter.

I confirm that disabling in bios the option "PCI EXPRESS POWER MANAGEMENT" works. I am using windows 8.0 x64 and a 34mm usb 3.0 express card by transcend.
