Thinkpad T440 T440 type 20B6 005BUS

2021-04-13, 18:00 PM

Have inherited this laptop and was looking to undertake some upgrades...including an increase amount of ram.

But having issues trying to find out what upgrades are possible. System Properties report 8 GB of ram. But after much googling trying to research...I still do not know what ram configuration is in the laptop.

Aida x64 also reports only 8 GB ram; but it indicates only 1 module of memory fitted. Most of the  answers found on google specified that the T440 has a basic 4 GB ram [soldered to the board] and that it also has a single Sodimm slot available...if that was the case it would mean the ram fitted was a 4 GB module...and I can switch it out for an 8 or maybe even a 16 GB module...so this is what I am hoping to clarify.

Seems a bit more involved to access the Memory slot so I wanted to be sure what was the actual process I need to follow.

Aida x64 also reported that the 8 GB ram was 1866 speed...does that mean that 12800 ram swap would not be successful; and that I have  to source a 14900 stick of ram to enable a swap to increase my ram capacity?

Welcome to the forum.

PSREF ThinkPad ThinkPad T440 says "8GB or 12GB* max / PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3L, non-parity, dual-channel capable*, 4GB memory soldered to systemboard on selected models, one 204-pin SO-DIMM socket (*for the models with 4GB on-board memory)"

It depends on which model you have. Go to Thinkpad t440 Lenovo PC Support, enter your system's serial number and check whether there's 4GB installed. (Or open up the unit and have a look.)

Aida x64 also reported that the 8 GB ram was 1866 speed...does that mean that 12800 ram swap would not be successful; and that I have  to source a 14900 stick of ram to enable a swap to increase my ram capacity?

You can install faster RAM. It will work but it won't run any faster than 1866MHz.

Hello PharrCarnell!

Welcome to community forums

The Thinkpad T440 has several model variants. According to the product spreadsheet, It has 4 GB soldered memory and the single slot was filled with 4 GB RAM. However, the maximum memory stated is either 8GB or 12 GB of DDR3L (204-pin SO-DIMM) memory.

You can refer to this link: https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad_T440

The system may support more memory as the technology develops.

I took off the rear cover this evening to find an 8 GB stick of Crucial Ballistix 1866 ram inserted in the 1 available memory slot...so I guess that means my laptop does not have a soldered 4 GB ram module as default from the factory?

Strange as every bit of advice indicates they all have the 4 GB onboard memory??
