Thinkpad T450s M.2 2242?

2020-09-05, 21:50 PM

My first post.

I just purchased one of these older laptops for the main reason to control my telescope EQ mount and ZWO cameras.

Is there an advantage or disadvantage using an M.2 2242 SATA drive for cache?   Is it needed?

Thank you

Mark

It's not needed but if the primary drive is a spinner it can speed things up somewhat. I don't recall if some versions of the T450s came with a small cache SSD.  The base spec isn't clear.  If it's already in place you might as well make use of it.

My personal preference - what I did with my T450s - is to install a higher capacity SATA SSD in that slot and install the OS on it as the primary drive.  That will realize some serious speed improvement.  The HDD becomes a data drive.

I purchased the laptop last night and still waiting on shipment.  Just thinking ahead and leaning what I can upgrade.

It comes with a 128gb SSD and not sure if it has the M.2 drive installed or not.  I do have a Samsung 500gb 860 Evo laying about and thinking about installing it.  If it's not really needed I'm not going to worry about it if it doesn't have one.

Thank you

If the primary drive is already an SSD there's absolutely no point in installing a low-capacity m.2 cache drive.  It adds complexity but no speed improvement.  As additional fast storage yes if of a reasonable capacity, as cache no.
