Are there 256GB option that will work too?

If you mean as a bootable drive in the WWAN slot, as stated several times in this thread: NO.  1) the WWAN slot  in a T480s doesn't support booting from an SSD and 2) they are the wrong (physical) size.

If you mean as a replacement for the primary SSD, see 2) above.

Re:Thinkpad T480 M2 2242 SSD

Not bootable - just additional storage.

I am repeating my question here for my T48s to make sure there is no ........:

I do NOT want to boot the T480s from WWAN slot

I do NOT want replacement for the primary NVMe - I am looking for ways to use WWAN slot for additional storage

Will the kingspec M.2 PCIE NVME 22*42 SSD 256G works on WWAN slot too?

Thanks

Will any M.2 2242 PCIe work on WWAN slot for T480s?

If u notice the picture, there is only one notch on the WWAN opening - M.2 2242 seems to have two notches - am I missing something?

Pls reply

Great question!  If you find a confirmed solution for using 2242 storage in the WWAN slot of a Thinkpad T480s, there are a bunch of people interested.  Most of the threads seem to confuse the T480 and the T480s and many also confuse the 2280 and 2242 slots or PCIe and SATA.  I have not been able to find definitive info anywhere.

Like others who have posted previously, I do not need to boot from the WWAN slot, I just want to add storage.  I plan to create VMs there and I want them on a separate physical storage device from my system boot storage.  I may have to gamble on a "might work" device from China to see if I can get it running in that slot.  Was hoping someone might have successfully done this with the T480s already.  If so, please school me!

Thanks again!

(By the way, the "What's DOS?" newbie label cracked me up.  What's BSD Unix?)

Guys

I have Lenovo T480 and can confirm you that:

1. 2242 slot - works very well with WD PC SN520 512GB PCI-E M.2 2242 NVMe.  Disc is visible, has very good results. Temperature is good, no concerns at all.

2. Second slot has NVMe INTEL SSDPEKKF512G8L, and that one serves as primary for me, with the system.

WD disc seems to be a little bit faster (c.a 10%) so its good to have there data for work (createing movies, rendering 3D images etc)

Still - on both speed is just perfect.

About upgrades: I could not find bigger disc that 512 GB (WD) for 2242 slot. So the only option, which remains is to add more space to second slot. And here you can add up to 4 TB.

Most of you propably will end now with 512 GB or 1 TB, as higher space, like 4TB costs half the price of T480 ;)

Enjoy upgrades with T480, have fun!

Just an update on my setup: been running the T480 with the 2242 Toshiba 512GB SSD in the WWAN slot with no issues since 2018. My only gripe with the T480 is it has terrible cooling so the CPU and GPU is constantly throttling killing the machine. Only way to run it well is with ThrottleStop. These Ultrabooks are nothing more than web-surfing boxes... I use mine with VMware Workstation and I get by but I'll have to go back to a heavy/clunky workstation model next year... I really wanted a thin, light mobile workhorse and this would be perfect with better cooling...

I did solve this problem finding netac NVMe M.2 2242 512GB. It was accepted by the system..

this drive is also OK to use as a boot drive. You can change boot priority in BIOS
