Thinkpad T480s battery drain while plugged in

2019-07-22, 13:07 PM

I have a T480s ( product number 20L8S5F206) that I have from new for several weeks now. I noticed that the battery is draining while the laptop is connected to the charger.

The charge thresholds are 40-80 as shown in the attached screenshot.

I tried to disconnect the charger, use the laptop till it gets below 40 and then keep it on charge. It can get up to 79% and then starts draining.

Any idea on what to do?

P.S. I have done a battery gauge reset on the 24th of June.

Does this drain happen while system is turned on, or while system is sleeping?  What is the rate of the drain?

The drain happen as the system is ON.

The rate is not constant. it can take 30 minutes to drop 1% from 77% to 76% and then an hour to drop from 76% to 75%

I checked my T480s by setting a 40/80% charge threshold.  The battery was already at 100% so I let it drain to 71% then plugged it in.  Now it has stayed at 71% for the last 90 minutes so I don't think I'm seeing the problem you reported.  Is there any possibility that your AC adapter is going bad?  Do you have another one you can try?  I can't think of what else could cause this kind of problem.

Does the same problem happen if you set a different charge threshold, such as 85/95%?

The AC adapter is definitely on the suspect list. However, I do not have another one to test.

I am currently using the 45W charger and my Laptop's specs are:

Core i7-8650U

Touchscreen

256GB SSD

16 GB RAM

Maybe this kind of specs require the 65W adapter?

If yes, then why Lenovo didn't ship one by default?

I haven't tried other threshold settings. Will def try that as well.

btw, I have been using the laptop for more than 2 hours now and it is still at 69% charge (was using it on battery power for a few minutes earlier). The number didn't drop yet from 69, this is driving me nuts as I really can't figure out why it went :smileyfrustrated:

Hi

Have you managed to find a solution. I am facing the same problem. I have brand new t480s and battery percentage decreses by 1% every couple of hours. I also have 45W charger which came in the box. My laptop has i7-8650u, intel graphics card and FHD.
