Thinkpad T490 - Issues with 3 monitor setup displaying

2021-04-26, 12:54 PM

Please Help!! Any information would be GREATLY appreciated!

Problem: I have my Lenovo ThinkPad T490 Laptop (64 bit, 32 GB RAM, Intel Core i7-8665U CPU @1.90GHZ 2.11 GHZ) docked to my Lenovo ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen 2. I have 3 Lenovo ThinkVision external monitor displays that I use. I have been able to work with my 3 monitor displays fine up until a couple days ago and one of my external monitor displays turned black and does not display, but the other two monitors do.

I first thought the issue was any updates to the computer, so installed any recommended updates from "system update". No fix. Then thought the issue was my older of the 3 monitors, so I purchased a refurbished new one but after installing that third monitor, the issue of 1 black screen and 2 functioning ones is still present.

Any ideas on how to fix this, so that I can operate on a 3 display setup with the laptop docked??

Below is more info on the setup:

Laptop--Lenovo ThinkPad T490 Laptop (64 bit, 32 GB RAM, Intel Core i7-8665U CPU @1.90GHZ 2.11 GHZ)

Monitor 1-- ThinkVision T22i-10

Monitor 2-- ThinkVision T22i-10

Monitor 3-- ThinkVision T22i-10 (refurbished)

Monitor 1 is hooked up via displayport cable to the dock.

Monitor 2 is hooked up via HDMI to the dock.

Monitor 3 is hooked up via VGA to USB-C directly into the laptop.

The monitor 3 hookup via VGA to USB-C is the one that is displaying black at the moment. But I hadn't had an issue with this connection before so I'm confused.

Many thanks in advance for any help!!

**FIXED!

Thanks for everyone's help.

Solution that worked for me- I tried unplugging everything reattaching everything including my 3rd monitor by the old USB-C to VGA adapter but that didn't work. Ordered a new cable that was USB-C to Displayport and that worked! Just tried it this morning and I have my laptop docked and all 3 external monitor displays working perfectly.

Cable I ordered from amazon-https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075V27G2R/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hi AL2020!

Greetings

The Thinkpad T490 can only support up to 2 external monitors as per the product spreadsheet: https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_T490/ThinkPad_T490_Spec.PDF

However, you can try installing the driver of the docking station then followed by the firmware. You can get it from here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/accessory/docks/thinkpad-usb-c-dock-gen-2/40as/downloads/driver-list/

Regards

Hi! Thanks for your reply.

I see your attached documentation stating that it can only support 2 external displays but I've ran 3 external displays while having my laptop docked to the USB-C Gen 2 dock for over a year now. Until recently when this issue started happening.

I looked into the driver and firmware updates and everything is updated. I should be able to have 3 displays based on this documentation below with my current docking station (intel platform).

Hoping someone can maybe find a work around for me. I know I've seen on other forums similar issues with the displays also showing "Power Saving Mode" etc or the black screen I'm experiencing.

All specifications in the psref documents assume that only one monitor is connected per port. This is not the case when a dock is used or displays are connected in a daisy-chain configuration.

Have you tried to dis- and re-connect the USB-C to VGA adapter?  Does it work with the dock disconnected?

Otherwise try to reset the system using the emergency-reset hole procedure.  Look it up in the user's guide.

You could also consider replacing the USB-C to VGA adapter with a USB-C to DP cable. No need to use analog signals, when the display has a DP port.

First try to get the VGA adapter working again. The emergency reset hole procedure  will disconnect the system from internal battery for a few seconds.

I guess you could do the same by disabling internal battery in BIOS and then reconnecting the AC adapter to the system.

This should reset the thunderbolt controller.

I’m a little worrisome of the emergency reset method. Only saying this because this is a company laptop with a multitude of important files etc I need.

would the emergency reset have any potential downsides?

thanks!

No data will be erased. It will just temporarily disable the internal battery until you reconnect the AC adapter. This is comparable to removing the battery on older laptops, where the batteries could simply be disconnected/removed.

You can also disable the battery via the BIOS.
