Thinkpad T520 vs T530 keyboard

2012-07-02, 20:42 PM

Hi Im thinking of getting a T530, however not sure how the keyboard is.

I see conflicting views here, some people prefering the new chiclet and some hating it, but theres not many opinions so far on these forums.

I have tried the keyboard on a T500 and T510, which obviously have the classic thinkpad keyboard and find it quite good, although i certainly think my old Toshiba Tecra A3 Keyboard has better feedback and feel.

I have tried the Lenovo Chiclet keyboard on a Lenovo G570 (i think it was called) in a local computer store and Im not overly impressed.

It is better than most of  the other chiclets but I find the feedback feels more like a pocket calculator. On a traditional keyboard, I find my fingers tend to glide over the keys and dont have to move my fingers much, as the keys are close to each other.

On the G570 chiclet keyboard I find, the spacing a bit far, which should be good to reduce errors but I still tend to make just as many errors and the feedback doesn't feel that well damped and cushioned.

My question, will the keys on the T530 or W530 have better feedback and damping than the G570 or do they

feel the same.

Thanks in advance for all you opinions and help

BTW I forgot to mention, my main use is spreadsheets, web browsing, occasional light photo editing and

youtube videos.

So it doesn't really matter if I purchase a T520 or T530, except that I tend to keep my laptops a long time

and was trying to future proof it as much as possible

Personally I hate the new chicklet keyboards. That type of keyboard should not be on a business machine, not to mention they destroyed the key layout.

I wanted the ivy processors to future proof laptop as much as possible.
Im just wondering if the Thinkpad T and W series chiclet keyboards are any better than the lower end lenovos. Im
Okay with the new 6 row layout but am concerned about keyboard feedback feel

If higher end laptops have better damping and feedback then I'm ok with it

The feedback is still good from what people have said on here. They are not the same as the ones in the non-ThinkPad models.

It will always remain a matter of taste. And even though I am a reseller, in my personal opinion I actually do enjoy the new keyboard.

On top of that, as far as chicklet keyboards go, this easily is the best around. The new layout still needs getitng used to, but personally, I saw my typing speed improve by approx 15%. The backlit keys also work fantastic in darkened environments (night flights) so for me defnitely the new keyboard feels like an improvement. But to be safe, go and try them out before you make your choice :-)

Problem is I have no where to try the thinkpads, local big box computer stores like pc world, only carry lower end lenovos

I have no idea if the Thinkpad chiclet keyboard feels any different.

The keypad layout is different, in that the G570 has a seperate number pad, the shape of the individual keys look

exactly the same as the new Thinkpads, however I would hope that the Thinkpads have better tactile feedback and is

a better quality keyboard.

Has anyone here tried the low end lenovo chiclet keyboards and the Thinkpad chiclet keyboards ?

Re: Thinkpad T520 vs T530 keyboard

I have a T530 and I am not a fan of the new keyboard.  I've gotten used to it (almost), but I think that the T510 had literally the best keyboard the world has ever seen.  Now be aware there are 3 keyboard manufacturers so you only have a 33% chance in another T510 of having the same exact keyboard as I had.

The new chiclet keyboard is ok, certainly the best of any chiclet I've tried, but it is a bit more "mushy" than ThinkPads are known for.  However, this also translates to extremely quiet.  Makes less noise while typing than anything I can remember.  The backlighting is cool.  My typing speed isn't any better or worse, but I really miss those solid T510 keys.

The biggest problems for me have been:

1) Keep pressing "end" when I want "delete".  The end key is where delete used to be.

2) Keep pressing a blank plastic spot instead of escape - the escape key used to be up on the 7th row.

3) The TrackPoint is set down further in the keys, feels weird.

The last one needs expalining  - on the new keyboard, the trackpoint is set down about 1/16 of an inch further in to the keyboard.  the top of it is now flush with the top of the keys.  It used to stick up above them somewhat.  They cut out the G/B/H keys so that you can access it, but still, it's weird.

I will eventually get used to the layout.  The problem is, I use lots of different keyboards every day (servers, other people's PCs, etc), and I really need them all to be the same.  So the fact that it's not the same as other keyboards is just a hassle.  And seriously, the T530 has plenty of physical space for a 7 row keyboard.   They're just trying to save money by not having two keyboard manufacturing lines for say the X-series where it does need to be physically smaller.

One other thing - the caps lock light is missing.  Now you only have the on-screen indicator, which is a problem when I've booted in to Linux.

Hi Brillat,

How do you find the new T530 Thinkpad lenovo keys, compared to the ideapad or

models like the G570 chiclet keys.

They look the same size and shape, how is the feel and the feedback in comparison ?
