Re: T530 keyboard - different models - very different quality.

My original keyboard was just plain broken - so I did a warranty replacement with Lenovo repair.  Took nearly 3 weeks since they were way backordered.  Lucky me though, this replacement not only comes with a working "R" key, but is overall superior.

Took 5 weeks for you to have in your hands the product you ordered? I mean, I'm glad you're happy. To me, that's atrocious business.

Thankfully I got one of the good keyboards on my T530 -- yellow under the TrackPoint. :)

New FRU for keyboard that is great:  04W3063 = yellow under trackpoint

1A

1B

Old FRU of keyboard that was lousy:  04W3137 = blue under trackpoint

2A

2B

notice actually the bubbling of the paint on the 04W3137 keyboard in image 2B.... clearly a lower quality.

so i called them in and asked what could be done for my less than perfect keyboard. here is what happened:

Called, asked for FRU 04W3063, was told it would ship in 5 business days as it was out of stock, and today (the next day) i received a package from lenovo, a keyboard. i open it up and see a keyboard, and am like... what? and then i remove the thinkpad cap, to see a black plastic nub. then i'm like... what? Then i look closer, its FRU is 04W3025, non backlit US English.

So i would like to say Good job to Lenovo for getting a keyboard to my house in less than a day, but its not the right FRU, so i'm sort of mixed feelings on this. :/

Re: Thinkpad T520 vs T530 keyboard

I just upgraded from a T510 to a T530. I like the new feel but I prefer the old key layout of Delete/Backspace & Page Up/Down & arrow keys.

Re: Thinkpad T520 vs T530 keyboard

Hi. First time poster, just discovered Lenovo, resurrecting an old thread.

Until yesterday Lenovo was just another brand I knew little about (other than its family relationship to IBM.) A colleague who knew I was in the market for a new laptop suggested I check them out. So I've spent the last two days falling in love with various models based on reviews -- which are uniformly glowing and credible -- and escalating in stages from the T400 to the T410 and T410s, and up through the T510, T520, and T530, and also some Edge models along the way. I'm shopping on eBay, so a wide range of models are all "current." And the price ranges of all of these overlap more than they did at retail.

I was all set to go with a T530, when I read in a review that the Context Menu had been completely removed. I couldn't believe I actually read that right. I checked to see if the T520 was the same. Then I did a search for some discussion about this, which led me to this thread.

With keyboards, I have 2 deal breakers: The Del key must be at the upper right, and the num pad must be nonexistent. I decided that I was willing to bend on the Del key as long as it was double height, as on some of the models I've researched. It'll take some getting used to, but at least it's a nice large target. And the T530 has it in the right position, and I was prepared to take a chance with the chiclet keyboard. But for all the time I've spent looking at photos of the T530, I never noticed the missing context key.

The Fn being on the far lower left where I'm used to having a Ctrl key definitely makes me hesitate but I've read those can be remapped (and am already wondering if their key caps can be switched.)

But to have the Context Key totally removed just seems like... why? I only started using it earlier this year but I became immediately hooked and use it all the time, especially in Word and browsers, instead of right clicking it and makes things so much faster and smoother.

I imagine it can also be remapped (am I right about that?), but I'm not crazy about the idea of having three such important keys be mis-labeled.

Maybe this makes things easier, since it gives me a solid basis for rejecting the T530. But I had already talked myself into it.

This hasn't put me off Lenovo, but what a strange thing for them to do (the PrtSc key??) Especially since they're especially known for their keyboards, which means they'd appeal to people who care about them, who would be most reluctant to want to make the adjustment.

yup. thats right. they removed some keys. i also find it annoying, being an owner of a W530, but i never used the context key anyways. but on the rare occasion (once to three times a year) i find it **bleep** annoying that its not there, ESPECIALLY since there is TONS of space for the keys to be where they USED to be. compare the T520 and T530 keyboards and you can clearly see they removed the topmost row of keys.

the other thing that i hate is how the page up and page down keys were moved. that, is just a no no for me. i dotn use page up and down so its not that big a deal, i remapped those using autohotkey to the good old "forward and backward"

as for FN key, it doesnt bother me, it can be remapped. it DID bother me on my T400 when it COULDNT be remapped without a technically warranty voiding unofficial bios mod - that works fine by the way.

but i do really like the feel and even my mom who doesnt really use computers commented on how she loved it. the backlight is just freaking fantabulous and i dont see myself not getting the option on future keyboards.

Ditto to everything you said. I have standardized my company on Lenovo / IBM Thinkpads for 10+ years; Of all the pain, I think the movement of the Pager keys is most frustrating since I use them the most. I've been on the T530 for a while now but my hands are still trained for the old key location.
