Thinkpad T580 with Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 external monitors don't work

2021-03-20, 1:08 AM

I just bought a new Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 to use with my Thinkpad T580. When I connect the Thunderbolt 3 cable between the dock and the Thunderbolt 3 port on the T580, monitors connected to the dock won't work. The T580 Windows 10 Display settings show all 3 monitors exist but only the laptop display works. The external monitors are blank. If I move the cable from the Thunderbolt 3 port to the USB-C / power port closest to the back of the T580, everything works. The problem with this configuration is that it is no longer using Thunderbolt. What am I missing to get it to work using the Thunderbolt port?

Thinkpad T580 with Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 external monitors don't work

Are you plugging in to the front or the back of the dock?
USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

Do the USB ports work when dock is connected to the thunderbolt 3 port?  Has the TB3 link been approved? You can check this with the Thunderbolt application.

You may want to read  the Thunderbolt 3 troubleshooting document for things to check

I plugged the TB3 cable into the back of the dock as the setup guide suggests.

All of the other ports work when I connect to the T580 TB3 port. I did approve the Dock in the Thunderbolt software. The TB software shows the dock is connected. The T580 "Display setting" even shows all 3 displays (laptop plus two monitors) are present. The monitor screens just remain black. I can't even make the monitor setup menu appear. It give the appearance that there is a display resolution/hertx mismatch. I have tried both DP cables and HDMI cables. There is a clear TB issue because everything works when I move the cable from the T580 T3 port to the T580 USB-C port with no other changes.

Have you tried the emergency reset? Sometimes this clear issues with the thunderbolt controllers.

What do you see in the systray when your TB3 dock is connected? Does it appear here?

I have the same issue with my T580.

Did you find a solution?

My TB3 Gen2 dock is working with my P72 and my wife's laptop (dell) but not with the T580.

If I connect the T580 with the thunderbolt port, the displays are detected but I cannot select them in the intel graphics settings.

As soon as I click apply, the intel graphics settings are reverted to single display.

If I connect the T580 to the docking station with the USB-C port, it is working but I cannot go above 2 x full hd at 60HZ.

I have two 4k monitors so this is not what I want.

I found a workaround but it is not the best, I would prefer to have a single wire solution.

I connect my dock (with only 1 monitor on HDMI1) on the USB-C port and I use a dongle (usb-c to HDMI) on the thunderbolt port to connect my second monitor.

This way I am able to have 2 x 3840 x 2160 monitors, mouse keyboard, external soundcard and charging.

You need to use a DP cable for one monitor and an HDMI for the other. Make sure use adjacent ports on the dock. Do not stack above each other. The DP cable is for a 4K monitor etc.
