Thinkpad t440p upgrades (Beginner)

2017-06-01, 20:43 PM

Welcome guys,

sry, i know has been discussed many times

I am now officially a owner of Thinkpad T440P

Specs:

- 20AWS19P0J

- 1600x900 14 Inch TN

- Intel Core I5-4200M 2.5 GHz

- 4 GB Memory

- 320 GB HDD

- Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit

I am new to upgrading computers so bear with me :-)

Have seen you can upgrade quite a bit on the T440p, no OTT.

- SSD: What type? (good firm), 256 or 512 GB?

- CPU: which I7 can i use and get? I7 4900MQ or better one? Bit worried after upgrade from I5 to I7 might overheat or other problems?

- Memory: can i have 12 or 16 GB? Which Brand is best for the buck and not cheap ones?

- Monitor: IPS modell, preferably even from 1600x900 to FHD 1920x1080 but what Brand and where to buy?

BTW i live in Germany, Europe.

I am glad to be apart of the Lenovo Family :-)

Best Wishes

MJD

I suggest you use the machine as it is for a while so you can see which (if any) areas you would want improved.  If asked a pre-sales question, I always suggest buying what you need, rather than buying something they know needs upgrading.

Suggestions:

- Download the hardware maintenance manual from the Lenovo website. It has clear diagrams for how to disassemble the computer and change parts.

- Forget the display, it's not cost effective to replace that part then fight with issues.

- Leave the processor alone. Not worth messing with it!

- Hard drive is super easy to change, putting in a Samsung SSD like the 840 EVO. This will make an excellent speed improvement

- You can increase the RAM easily also, only requires removing the keyboard.  I don't remember the specs on that model, but it will take 8gb easily, check the specifications to see if it will hold 16gb.

After those are done and the OS is re-loaded it will run much better, and I think you will be happy with it.  If you really want those other upgrades, I'd recommend buying a computer with them already installed. Upgrading CPU and display on a laptop is just not usually wise.

I am using a T-500 as my Windows Insider test machine and it runs Windows 10 very well. It has 8gb RAM.

Thanks for quick reply, appreciated :-)

 I can get 850 evo, thanks :-)

1 - Can i use two harddrives with adapter? (hdd and one ssd). Put os and progs on ssd, rest on hdd or just use my external?

Memory: 4GB is not enough :-)

2 - Using (Adobe CS6, Blender and other progs in Video & Photography). Specs 16gb max, PC3-12800 1600Mhz DDR3L SO-DIMM. Which brand are good, advised to stay away from crucial / cheaper, correct?

3 - Battery Life: I have 6 cell battery and the battery life could be better since i am on the road, should i get a 9 cell or 12 cell to have a better battery life, max 10 - 12 hrs ?

4 - Docking Stations: Are there issues like flickering? Which docking station, so i can hook up to my two Samsung S24E650BW PLS monitors?

5 - Is there a difference between Win 10 Pro or going back to Win 7 Pro? I only use win 7 on my towers and have not made the upgrade.

nice day you guys :-)
