Interesting. For me happens many times a day. Had you still trackpad disabled in BIOS?

@lightner, it sounds painful. You actually can clone windows drive and keep the same installation running on the next computer. See this: https://www.howtogeek.com/239815/why-cant-you-move-a-windows-installation-to-another-computer/

I also have done it in the XP days using Ubuntu from bootable drive, the key was to delete hard drive entries from system registry before shutting down the Windows and cloning the drive (otherwise it ended up BSOD on next boot on new drive).

Also in some cases it might be better to encapsulate most of programs in virtual machines, which makes transferring easy.

Yes, the TrackPad has been disabled in the BIOS for the last month or so, per the request of Lenovo.  Seems to have made no difference in the frequency of the failure, which has been maddeningly variable---hours to days, and now weeks!

Thank you so much for the suggestions.  That article confirms what I'd learned over the years.

I used PC-Mover a few years ago for the move from Win7 to Win10---which I would not try again.  There was still so much stuff that needed to be re-done "manually".

I'm temped to turn off BitLocker and then clone the drive image using a bootable Linux USB thumb drive and an external USB drive, and then try to run everything under a Virtual Box.  I'd likely need a new Windows 10 Pro license and then endlessly "fiddle" with lots of stuff.  In contrast, doing something like this with a Linux drive image is trivial [sigh!].

I have an old WinXP image I now use infrequently to access ancient ill-behaved Windows apps.  I remain amazed by the speed and quality of the emulation under VBox.  Unfortunately, in my experience, all the Microsoft licensed apps need to be "reinstalled" when one does that.  But the good news is with MS Windows and/or Linux in a VBox everything is trivial to move from PC to PC.

One thing I am going to do before I move everything to the new Thinkpad is to run on the old, "freezing" Thinkpad for a week or so via remote access, using something like Tight VNC.  I want to know that the new Thinkpad T15g does not have the exact same TrackPoint issue as the old one before moving on!

I see that the new Thinkpad shipped yesterday, and the warranty was transferred last night, so it looks like Lenovo was serious about fixing this for me.  I will report back what I discover.

Thanks for all the help---and shared pain---from those following this forum thread! :-)

You're right, we need to do something.  I've only seen, over a month ago, 1 Lenovo tech in here.  It's been crickets from them.  I think one week we ALL get them on Facebook.  The next week, we go to Twitter.  The following week Linked In, etc.

I think this is the way to proceed.  It's unfortunate, but, I doubt Lenovo will do anything on their own without some prodding on our part.

Sure have.  3 months after getting it, the trackpoint died.  For me, plugging in an external mouse seems to restart the trackpoint.  At least, it worked for a month, then it did it again.  I repeated my mouse trick & it's been fine for a week so far.

Agreed. The bigger the corporation the less concern they have for customers.

Re:Trackpoint randomly stops working

Why are they building all these new versions of the driver if everything works well on a 15 years old "PS/2 compatible mouse" driver?

P.S. A few more days on PS/2 compatible mouse driver. No problems. And scrolling works really smooth with X-mouse Button Control. Right before switching to the PS/2 driver the TrackPoint was freezing a few times daily. But I still can't be 100% sure the problem solved for me, because I also had it working without freezing during a few weeks on regular Synaptics driver. Probably a month will be enough to confirm if this workaround really worked or failed. I'm not going to test 19.5.19.88 (or any other following versions) while PS/2 driver is working...

Lenovo, where should I (and anyone else in this thread) send an invoice for the time I spent testing different drivers?
