And 3 days since "The Lenovo team will further review and check the said concern in the Lenovo forum discussion. -Chris_Lenovo". No comments from Lenovo here. 3 days is enough (this thread is almost a year old already) for at least "we're investigating the problem and will be ready to provide more detailed answer in a few days". But someone is not taking this problem seriously. I'm contacting a few vice president / executive level top managers.

For the occasion, I've been forcing a colleague to try his trackpoint several times an hour. When it finally failed, I did manage to get it back to work. But that was with a 'patched' (well, butchered) version of the flashing utility. Obviously, I can't distribute that for copyright (and shame) reasons. So this weekend I'll be working on finding out exactly what the utility does (I have a basic idea, but...) and recreating it. 

Do you own a modern ThinkPad? Then your TrackPoint is probably failing too. https://broken-trackpoint.com/ for a workaround.

Hello,

 

I don't have a solution for the problem (I got the same problem with my P14Gen 2 too) but I noticed that putting the laptop into hibernation mode instead of sleep seems to make the trackpoint work again each time, without having to actually do a full reboot.

 

On windows 10 you have to manually enable the hibernation mode in the power settings (just look for "enable hibernation windows 10" on Google).

@Rydeen It's been two months since your last message, which as far as I can tell is the latest we have from Lenovo on this issue. This is a serious issue with many of your current laptop models.

 

Is it possible to give us any feedback regarding if there's been any progress? When can we expect a solution?

Dear custoimers,

I'm working more than 10 forum volunteers to analyze the failure symptom by debug version TrackPoint driver.

Several data I got feedbacks from users but no effective data captured. 

Currently, our Lenovo service engineer is working to get customer's failing sample to investigate the issue.

That "failing sample" might be my Thinkpad T15g Gen 1.  Lenovo sent me a brand new Thinkpad T15g Gen 2 Thursday afternoon.  I've mostly finished transferring all my files (over 1.5 million) and almost all of my applications over from the failing Thinkpad.  I have not seen any TrackPoint "freezes" on the new Thinkpad.

 

I should be sending the old one back tomorrow or the next day.  What a time-suck it is to move everything to a new PC!

It took a while before my poor colleague's TrackPoint refused again, but I finally managed to test my utility. It seems to be working!

 

It calls an API Synaptics published years back. It has been removed from their site somewhere after 2011, but is still in use by the reflash utility. All it does is tell the driver to scan for Synaptics devices and re-initialise them. Still, I take no responsibility if this bricks your laptop or launches a thermo-nuclear warhead.

I woke my machine and within 30 mins had an unresponsive thinkpad. Reflashed the firmware (without being plugged in) out of habit, but I will try the utility next time. Given the frequency of the mouse failure, it should be no more than an hr or two before I can test the utility -- thanks for putting this together though @Bitblade .

 

 

It's a **bleep** shame that we have to resort to using hacks to get the mouse to work on our laptops... 

 

@Rydeen - My t14s G2 is going back to lenovo being within the return period, if you have means to secure/intercept the hardware for testing I can provide RMA and similar info via DM.

 

Separately, if there's some form of logging utility you want me to run on my machine to provide a data dump, let me know. While I don't know what causes the issue, it occurs routinely on my machine.

@Nate88H since you created this thread, can you please Edit your original post to captured the affected models? Since most people landing on this thread will be lazy, they won't bother skimming through 20 pages to understand the problem & there may be fixes (which users should try and report back).

 

Since Nate88H hasn't signed in since creating this thread I'm tagging those on the first page --  @user Jens @Alex-a @evn   -- to see if you can edit your post on P1 to summarize the list of impacted models and link to individual post highlight workarounds -- which includes using the "official firmware flashing" (w/o being plugged in) or unofficial workarounds like what BitBlade has shared above.

 

Updating your posts on P1 will help showcase how big of an issue this is for lenovo and will help readers understand that this goes way beyond the T14 (which is referenced by Nate88h in his original post)

@Bitblade  , I can confirm the utility works!  It restored my faulty trackpoint after it became unresponsive after the machine woke from sleep.

 

Fantastic job outdoing lenovo engineering and lenovo support team after 9 months of no solution.
