Turning off Harddrive for power conservation - T430s

2013-05-07, 6:35 AM

I have installed an mSata (Crucial 256gb) drive as my primary drive/OS drive.

I have also installed a spindle harddrive in the harddrive bay (Seagate Hybrid 500gb 5400rpm)

I find that the battery indicator for remaining life has gone down by at least an hour even when I am not (and haven't since startup) accessed the secondary storage drive.

I'm not sure if there is a tool to see if it is spinning while on battery and not being accessed.

Is there a way to turn it off when idle?  (I have adjusted them in the power settings to turn off after 1 minute of idle but I'm not sure if it's working)

T430s, nvidia 5200m, 16GB ram, optical (always turned off)

You don't say what OS you're running.  You can set the HDD to spin down when idle in Win 7 - and probably in Win 8, but I can't test that ATM.  Here's my T420 configuration (m4 mSATA SSD + 500GB HDD).

Do you have the Real SSD C300? That drive does have a highish power consumption of .7W at idle and around 4W when under load. The Seagate drive uses 1.2W at idle and about 3.8W under load.

Some of the Seagate drives had an update for the firmware because their built n power management was causing them to spin down too aggressively. You may want to make sure that your dive has the latest firmware.
