USB 2.0 data transfer : slow rates

2011-02-09, 19:54 PM

Hello.

What is the average speed for copying data (let's say video avi files) to flash drives. I am detecting an average of 3.0 MB/sec. Is not this VERY slow for USB 2.0?

I am using a Lenovo T400 with Windows 7 64 bits.

I copy at around 25MB/s average for my T400 sequentially. Could your flash drive be at fault? Some flash drives are slow.

This is happening in all 3 USB ports.

I think is not a thumb drive problem, as I have tried with another pendrive (famous thumbdrive company starting with Ki).

So, copying and reading from and to the pen drive, you see a transfer speed (what W7 says) of that speed? Even in large files? (1 GB).

Thanks

Video files are typically slower, even over fast gigabit network drive to drive. I think you can't fix that in window, it's just like that

You try copy some data files and you may see the speed increase.

I realized it is a OS problem. In linux I achieve 20MB/sec with the same file. Where can it be the problem? System resources, memory and data usage looks ok...

Maximum for hard drives on USB2 seems to be around 40 MB/s, but flash drives are slower. Regarding the difference between Windows and Linux: Do you have any kind of antivirus on Windows? It might be scanning files on the fly (usually called something like "real-time protection") which would slow down transfers.

I Disabled real time protection of M$ Antivirus.

I checked that the device is configured as "Optimize for performance"

I checked that my hard drive is configured with "Cacheing"

I tried with FAT, NTFS and exFAT.

Speed is always about 5MB / sec

Weird!

If you are really intent on investigating, there are more things to look at:

1. Is anything else connected to any USB port at the same time you are transferring?

2. Dig in the device manager, find host controller (may show up as multiples), open "properties", "advanced", see

if you can find bandwidth information and reserved values (may be hardware dependent).

3. Is it possible that transfer rates are reported differently? Real rates may differ from what you see (how do you check?)

Man you are great! :smileyvery-happy:

I checked the USB host controller and true that the multiple items had reserved 20-30% of the bandwidth. So I uninstalled them, and restarted windows, and the transfer is now 48MB/sec.

I was checking with clock and size of the files.

Maybe some the usb driver from my hp printer did this. Or maybe windows did it automatically when a usb pendrive was going in and out very fast as it was not good connected.

Thank you gf12!
