Unable to get into Safe Mode

2010-05-02, 2:36 AM

I'm wanting to do some work under the hood of my new T410s working in 'Safe Mode', but holding down F8 during the restart gives me a "Stuck Key" error message, and then I'm led directly into the BIOS/Start Up editing area.

Any recommends about how to get around this weird little detour?

press the F8 button a couple of times during startup, but don't hold it down.

Thanks, beickus, that did the trick!

[congrats on your bailout, btw.]

@lead_org: That stuttering F8 is what I did in Vista, and it always worked, but if you read the Lenovo Help files on the subject, they say "hold the key down." Anyway, my problem's solved.

Okay I must be blind--I'm having a hard time finding this.  Which control panel applet did you launch?  The closest I can find is just called "System", and I can't find anywhere in there to set it for safe boot.  I don't need to do this right now, it's just that I went looking for it since I've never noticed it before.

Thanks!

Mutnat,

When I tried to find my way back based on beickus' directions, I couldn't do it. But I did find an alternative. Thus:

Control Panel | in the upper right hand corner, change "View By: Category" > "View ... Icons"

Admin Tools comes up front & center > System Configuration is near the bottom of the list | Boot tab within it

Hope this helps

startup system configuration (go into your search programs and files), then select boot tab, then click on safe boot box.

Re: Unable to get into Safe Mode

Just out loud...  Why did lenovo send out thinkpads, with the safe mode not enabled???  Is there any reason to leave out an important security feature???

My laptop just had a virus warning.  So I wanted to shut it off, and restrat in safe mode to minimize the risk while I cleaned it.

However, there was no safe mode available.. so I had to stay in the normal mode while I first enabled safe mode... only then could I actually use safe mode.

...So they add hard drive shock protection, R&R, ThinkVantage Business Tool scan.... but don't enable the already existant Safe Mode :smileytongue:

Also,   for anyone else like me who could not locate any of the directions on this page to enable safe mode:

Here is a way that can be done no matter what view, version, etc of windows.

Start button   ->    Run   ->   msconfig    ->    BOOT.INI  tab  -> select the safe modes you want to have available.

Thanks for all the info here everyone.   It was a wild goosechase trying to follow, but it gave me enough clues that I remembered about the BOOT.INI

UPDATE:  by doing the above process, it seems to require changing it back the same way.  Changing the BOOT.INI that way appears to change the way it will start... as opposed to providing the options of starting in safe mode.

Here I am 6 years after buying my Thinkpad and never once needing to launch Safe Mode and find this annoying issue. Lenovo really messed up not enabling safe mode boot.
