Unattended automatic shut down in new ThinkPad T490

2020-12-02, 19:30 PM

I just recently bought a Lenovo ThinkPad T490 and am facing an issue with it. Whenever I leave it unattended and active (Apps are open) for some time (1-2 hours) it shuts down. It does not Hibernate, it does not sleep, but it shuts down. The reason I know is this; I use Google Chrome a lot. If the laptop was hibernating or sleeping, after starting again, Chrome would not say "Chrome did not shut down correctly...restore pages" every time the machine hibernates/sleeps. I don't think it is a hardware issue - checked all the parts and they are working fine. Just some settings need to be modified.

I do want the laptop to go to sleep after some time of inactivity. I believe the laptop wants to go to sleep, but something glitches and it shuts down instead. Can someone please help me with this?

Thank you in advance!

My guess is that it is crashing when entering or resuming from sleep mode and restarting, so I would check for the presence of small memory dump files in the C:\Windows\Minidump folder, and the full MEMORY.DMP file located in the C:\Windows folder.

A free tool called WhoCrashed by Resplendence Software may be able to point to the driver at fault.

If no memory dump files are found, then check the System Event Log for any errors around the time your system shuts down

  1. Right-click Start and select Event Viewer
  2. Expand the Windows Logs in the left pane of the Event Viewer window
  3. Select System
  4. In the right pane of the Event Viewer window, select Filter Current Log...
  5. Check the boxes for Critical and Error

Regards,

No, I do not work for Lenovo, this is a user supported forum, but my first computer was a TRS 80 from Radio Shack.

Hi. I'm having the same issue.

I looked at the event log and here's the screenshot of it.

I have created a thread at SuperUser and also shared my workaround. The issue is still there as of 8th Jan 2021 despite all the recent updates installed.

Can confirm this as my servicing technician told me this is a "known problem for T490". It has been escalated multiple times but no reply yet." He continues that the current workaround is to "set the sleep timer very short (say 10 mins) so it goes to sleep instead of the sudden shutdown."

Followed one of the user's advice to check 'Event Viewer' and found it as well.

I've updated the latest BIOS Update (10 [64]) as of 23/02/21 and issue is still persisting. All power options have been checked i.e. sleep, hybrid sleep, etc.

What a FREAKING MESS Lenovo?! FIX ASAP PLEASE for God's sake.

I started facing the same issue with my T490 in Jan right after I installed "Windows 10, version 20H2" among other updates. Once I reset the PC, the issue got automatically got resolved until today, when I had to mandatorily install the updates. I will try the setting-sleep-timer-to-10-mins trick. Thanks.

Exactly the same issue. It does not happen all the time, though. A couple of month ago I contacted Tech Support, they emailed me to coordinate a visit and after my reply never heard from them again. Not very happy with that either.

Anyway, I hope they can fix this shut down issue with an update or something.

In the meantime, I'll try the suggested workarounds (to set it to sleep only, not the "turn off display," after 10 minutes).
Thanks for sharing those workarounds!
