Unknown freeze problem with weird display disorder on T14 laptops

2020-09-15, 11:30 AM

Hello,

We recently purchased around 20 pieces of Lenovo T14 laptops, and encountered a weird problem where the laptops freeze with display disorder output like block lines. The freeze final state varies, depending on the last thing that was shown on the screen before the laptops froze. The issue happens on both the laptops screen and on the external monitors if they connected to any, as can be seen in the screenshot below.

This problem happened right when we first unpacked the laptops and installed a clean copy of Windows 10 on them (each of the laptops froze once during the Windows 10 setup). After hard reset on all laptops the setup continued and we successfully installed Windows 10 on them, and then we run the Lenovo Update Utility to install all drivers, firmware and important updates. The problem is that the issue still remains, even after all of the drivers are up to date.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello,

Could you more specific about configuration AMD or Intel .. ?

Did you try to run the "factory" OS before doing a clean install ?

Your windows 10 copy were installed from where ? network ? USB ?

Hi P_F,

Our Lenovo T14 are Intel based.

I forgot to mention that when we turned on each laptop for the first time and it booted to the factory OS it did the same things - it froze once at the booting process with weird lines on the laptop's screen. And some of the laptops that we rebooted which managed to reach the factory OS Desktop froze after a while without touching them too. So we're not sure if it's an OS related issue but maybe BIOS configuration that is causing this behavior. Though, we already tried setting default settings in the BIOS.

Our company cannot use the factory OS due to company requirements so we had to install a clean copy of Windows 10. We installed it via USB.

Thanks

Hello IToto,

Thanks for all the informations.

Did you try to run the hardware scan on  Lenovo Vantage  ?

The last Bios should be the 1.13 /1.07ECP ... you could try the default settings

PackageUEFI BIOSECPBIOS Update Utility (Windows)BIOS Update Utility (Linux)BIOS Update Bootable CD
1.131.13 (N2XET23W)1.07 (N2XHT17W)Current releaseCurrent releaseCurrent release

I Read somewhere, if my memory is right, that some updates has to be done and after unplugged the USB C and  the internal battery .. then reboot

I'm a bit confused with your problem and feel concerned because I order a T14...  but it not appears as a typical T14 symptom.

Keep us in touch

Hi P_F,

Thanks for the info.

Yes, we run the Vantage scan as well as the Lenovo System Update Utility.

According to the product's drivers page here https://support.lenovo.com/il/en/downloads/ds544977, the latest BIOS version for this model at the time of writing this comment is 1.09, and that's the version we have on our laptops after updating each and every one of them with the Lenovo System Update utility.

Hello IToto, you are right.... it is 1.09... I'm sorry I cant help you ... If your OS on USB stick is clean, and if you check everything you should ask the lenovo support.... It is very unlikely that you got the same problem and malfunction on 20 laptop .. but i can imagine this could happend....Could you please keep us informed about your problem:Best regards and good luck

Hi P_F,

Thanks for the reply and willing to assist. It is much appreciated! :)

We raised a ticket to the local vendor on this topic as well. I will update here once we'll have progress.

We have similar 20UD (AMD).

I had same (similar) issues with TB3 gen 2 dock & USB-C gen 2 docks

everything updated with latest drivers and firmwares.

local support replaced TB3 dock and leave it with factory firmware.

now i dont have that kind of issues but sometimes my both 1080p monitors didnt wake up.

on the other hand USB-C dock didnt remember its app position when laptop enter sleep. so afte each sleep everything is on main monitor.

TB3 persist application position on all monitors.

highly disappointed thinkpad docks which should work perfectly with thinkpad laptops.

proba ly i am going to open my own topic with all photos and videos i have.

The issue is still happening in our T14 computers. Here's another example from this very morning on another machine. Both the laptop screen and the external monitor show the same thing.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hello

I have experienced a similar problem about 3 - 4 times on my T14 20UD with AMD Ryzen 4650U Pro, which I've used for almost 3 weeks now.

I have dual boot Ubuntu 20/Windows 10. The distortion of the whole laptop screen only happened once - after rebooting, before I had the chance to log into either OS. Whole screen was covered in colourful rectangles, much like in the original post, but even smaller. I haven't used any external display yet.

Those other times it was during some work with GUI in Ubuntu, like resizing windows (dragging with mouse) or so and it went back to normal after a couple of seconds.

In MS Windows I have not seen this problem, albeit it is seldom I have Windows open.

By the way, I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem, but I can't decrease brightness using the system slider in Ubuntu, it is constantly on maximum. Brightness control is OK in Windows.

Update 20201009: I just got a new case of screen scrambling. It happened upon waking up the laptop from a "suspended" state.
