Upgrade T400 to Discrete / Switchable Graphics

2008-10-21, 2:44 AM
My T400 just arrived today, and I was totally bummed out to see that it only had the integrated graphics options. I double checked the invoice and saw that I had, indeed, somehow forgot to select the discrete graphics option. Is there any way I can easily upgrade to the discrete / switchable option without having to go through the entire ordering and waiting process again? As in, install some parts myself or send it into the depot and have them install it and send it right back?

welcome to the forum!

GPUs are permanently soldered to the system planar.   replacing the entire planar is the only way to "upgrade" the GPU and doing so would void your warranty.   unfortunately, you will have to return your system and order another.

Thanks Erik. I'm assuming there's a 15%-ish restocking fee? Is there any chance this could be waived since I'd be replacing my current laptop with a near-identical-but-slightly-pricier model?

andrew,

this sounds like an unfortunate situation but there are a few things you can do.

first, check your configuration carefully and compare what you ordered versus what was shipped.   if there is a discrepancy then you'll have grounds in getting the restocking fee waived.

next, if your shipment matches your order then call the sales department and see if they will negotiate with you on restocking.   see if you can book a new order in the same phone call in trade for reducing the restocking fee.

finally, if all else fails and you don't want to take the 15% hit then you could consider reselling your machine.   both forum.thinkpads.com and forum.notebookreview.com have no-charge marketplaces where you could list it for sale.

returns end up in the lenovo outlet whether they've been opened, used, or are fully sealed.   the 15% fee is in place simply to help offset the costs involved in accepting the return and minimize the impact in having to resell a custom configuration.
