Upgrade ram T430U

2013-03-09, 8:26 AM

Hi everyone. I have just purchased a T430U with the i5-3317U processor, and i wish to upgrade to 16gb ram. But I am not sure which type or kind of ram to get, I have been looking around and there is just to many to choose from. So if possible I would like a litle help :smileyhappy: Thanks in advance.

Personal Systems Reference (PSREF) says "8GB max PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3, non-parity, dual-channel capable, two 204-pin SO-DIMM sockets." I don't know why they say only 8GB max because other T430 models work well with 16GB. Perhaps someone else with a T430u can confirm if 16GB will work.

As for the type of memory, your safest bet is to buy from Lenovo. Use the memory selector on their support site. You can also buy RAM from a reputable manufacturer, e.g. Crucial® Memory Advisor results for the Lenovo ThinkPad T430u Laptop/Notebook.

But first you need to confirm that 16GB will actually work in a T430u.

I am Aware that the official statment is it only holds 8gb, but i have seen that several other owners have upgraded to 16gb. In addition it supossely need to have the Bios updated for the extra rams´s to work.

In that case use RAM that's intended for the T430s, e.g.  Crucial® Memory Advisor results for the Lenovo ThinkPad T430s Laptop/Notebook.

You'll need DDR3 RAM intended for notebooks, , i.e. SODIMM modules with 204 pins:

- 2 modules, each 8GB

PC3-12800, 1,600MHz speed. (Slower memory like 1,333 MHz will work but not at maximum speed. I doubt you'll notice the difference in practice.)

- 1.35V is the voltage. (1.5V modules will probably also work but draw slightly more power. Again, not a huge issue.)

If you're planning to buy from a local store you might want to take an existing module out from your system to show them. Or make a photocopy of the stickers on both sides of the module.

Perfect :smileyhappy: I will try that. I intend buying it online so I will just go after the ones that fit in the T430S. Thank you very much for your help.

yes the 16 gigs of RAM will work in the T430u.

The bios firmware needs to be version 2.06 or above, the current shipping machine should already have the latest bios update to allow for the 16 gigs upgrade.
