Upgrading the CPU on T440p to Core i7-4910MQ

2019-01-19, 20:09 PM

Hello,

I want to upgrade the CPU on my T440p (Core i5-4200M). According to a PDF from Lenovo, the best CPU I can install is Core i7-4910MQ.

I have a few questions, tho:

1) Are all T440p's compatible with that CPU?

2) Do I have to replace the fan as well?

3) Are all other components compatible with the i7 CPU?

I'd appreciate your help.

Thank you.

I have never done it, but I believe the answers to your 3 questions are yes. no and maybe.

The maybe relates to your A/C adapter.  The quad core CPU uses moire power than the i5 so regardless of what came with your machine, I would use a larger adapter.  The quad core will run hotter and may be more likely to throttle down due to heat

Thank you for your help.

No idea what's the power of my adapter, tho. Would there be issues if I'd use an underpowered adapter?

I've checked an it's a 90W power adapter. I've read that i7-4910MQ's came with 135W power adapters.
If I keep using the 90W adapter, could that cause any damage or any other issues?

Using an underpowered adapter can cause serious problems. I looked at the sysyems reference and all the machines in standard configurations having quad core machines also came with nVIDIA graphics and shipped with 135W adapters.  If you have integrated (Intel) graphics, I would expect you would draw less power, but it is always safer to use a larger adapter.

OK, thanks! I've bought a new 135W original Lenovo adapter. I'm all good to go now. :)
