The SIM card slot comes with every "WWAN-enabled" ThinkPad. What that means is the ThinkPad has a built-in WWAN antenna and a socket for an optional WWAN card.

Do you have a WWAN card installed?

your machine's factory specs:

ThinkPad T430 (2344-4TG)
i5-3210M(2.50GHz),4GB RAM,500GB 7200rpm HD,14in 1366x768 LCD,Intel HD Graphics,CDRW/DVDRW,Intel 802.11agn wireless,Bluetooth,1Gb Ethernet,UltraNav,Secure Chip,Fingerprint reader,Camera,6c Li-Ion,Win7 Pro 64

don't show it to have or be upgradeable with mobile broadband (WWAN), so i don't believe you can make any use of the SIM card slot.

my understanding is that if it had been listed as "WWAN upgradeable", you would have the required antennae already installed and would only need to get an approved WWAN mPCIe card. if you need the antennae, an upgrade is significantly more complicated, as it requires opening the LCD/lid assembly to install them.

hope this helps a bit.

edit: i just saw Dorian's post above. for comparison's sake, my X220 has the SIM card slot, but is specifically labeled as not WWAN-upgradeable and i can confirm that there are no mobile broadband antennae installed. maybe that's changed with the *30-series machines.

well, if you determine you have the antennae, it's pretty straightforward to get a WWAN card.

if you get your hardware maintenance manual: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?DocID=UM014541

see pgs 73-76 for how to check for the unattached antennae leads.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the clarification. I had wrongly assumed that the presence of a SIM card slot meant the ThinkPad was WWAN upgradeable.

(Suggestion: If that's not the case then perhaps Lenovo could start placing a cardboard "SIM" in the SIM slot to indicate if the unit is or is not WWAN-upgradeable.)

no worries.

i thought that, from your post, maybe the antennae were installed by default on *30 series machines. i don't have one to check. from the hmm, it sure looks easy to check for the leads, though. easier than the *20 series.

cheers.

Re: Use SIM in T430

Hello,

My laptop is a T430s. It has a SIM card slot and in the device manager I can see in Modems the "H5321 gw Mobile Broadband Modem Port" existing and driver successfully installed.

Is the "H5321 gw Mobile Broadband Modem" a 3G modem?

I inserted the SIM card, installed connection software but it cannot detect my operator network (Vodafone).

Would you have any idea what the problem may be?

Thank you
