Which needed parts to change M.2 SSD T470 for a SATA one

2018-02-23, 17:21 PM

Hi,

I've got a T470, 20JNS3FG00 type.

I'd like to replace the existant SSD ("256G,M.2,2280,PCIe3x4,SAM,OPAL", FRU 00UP436) by a SATA one (https://www.samsung.com/us/computing/memory-storage/solid-state-drives/ssd-850-evo-2-5-sata-iii-1tb-mz-75e1t0b-am/).

Which parts (adaptator or cable) do I need to order to do that?

If it helps, here is a picture of the existant: https://framapic.org/N3ZoSuhWOUiP/UMxKsVSp2HTy.jpg

Thanks for your kind help.

I can't comment on the parts, I'me sure someone else can, but so that you know, Samsung has now released the 860 Evo, the newer version with slightly better performance and longer waranty for not too different price.

I know you need a different cable to go from the the motherboard connector to the drive:  FRU 00UR495

I have never taken one of those apart so I'm not sure about the caddy.  The M.2 drive sits on an adapter that mounts on top of a caddy.  I assume if you remove the adapter, the caddy will take a 2.5" 7mm-thick drive, but I cannot guarantee the caddy is the same, since I never did it myself.  If it were mine, I would remove the back cover and look at it.

Hi,

I guess a specific caddy is needed indeed, the installed one doesn't seem compatible at all with a sata ssd:

here are some pictures of it: https://huit.re/lenovossd

Could you please tell me which parts I need to order then? :)

Best regards

Up :)

Except the FRU 00UR495 cable (https://download.lenovo.com//Images/Parts/00UR495/3.jpg), which parts do I need for a sata ssd, such as a caddy or similar?

Thanks for your kind help!

nothing, just remove the m.2 adapter from the drive (HDD/SSD) bracket

Thanks for your confirmation, I thought a caddy or rubber would be necessary, but it's great if it's not.

Best regards to all of you who helped to solve my question!
