Re: Who would like a 15 inch ThinkPad that has a centered keyboard and trackpad (no number pad)

That is the holy grail of Thinkpads. That plus a 7-row keyboard and a 3:2 display (use the same panel as Surface Book 2 15?) would be the best of all worlds.

Even just a numpad-less 15" 16:9 would be great. Just please let me choose to go w/o numpad. My hands and fingers are long, a 14" just won't do it for me, but a 15" has that frustrating numpad that goes useless 99.99999% of the time. Having to type offset causes strain on my right wrist, and keeps my view of the display off-center, which annoys me.

I created an accout to post this reply.

@Skiboat, As a business customer, yes.  I have a great number of users who want the 15 inch screen but have no need for the number pad.  Myself included.  It would be wonderful to have the option to order a centered keyboard/TrackPoint instead of the current shrunken keyboard+numpad with the offset Trackpad.  This is the same group of users that would like to have their dedicated Function keys back.

Another longtime Thinkpad fan, who just created an account for this one thread: Definitely make 15" models with a centered, no-numpad keyboard!  Much better looking, and much better ergonomics; can you ever imagine design-centric companies like Apple making an off-center keyboard/UX?!  Of course not!

The asymmetric keyboard and trackpad makes even the highest-end Thinkpads look cheap and low-end too.  Just don't do it; give us back the decades long winning formula of the traditional Thinkpad keyboard, thanks.

Re: Who would like a 15 inch ThinkPad that has a centered keyboard and trackpad (no number pad)

same here.

I' ve owned and used

Z60m (2006)

T61p (2007)

T510 (decent 1600x900 panel)

T430u (what a mistake that was - worst panel ever... only good part was that I could donate it to someone blisfully not annoyed by the ultra narrow vertical view angle...grrr)

W530 (FHD) this one still sees regular use due to the 32GB of RAM - 4 x SODIMMS used to rule when 8gb/module was the limit)

T530 (FHD)

X230 (IPS)

(and of the Lenovo road here)

I have found the offset keyboard really unappealing hence the move to MBP 15 (instead of P51) 2 weeks ago - 16:10 screen and no offset keyboard (and what a good touchpad!) - the no/shallow travel MBP keyboard is lacking, too but I have adjusted to the point where it' s no longer an annoyance.

I like front/upward firing speakers, too (the [T|W]530 and the MBP 15 do have that and it does make a difference IMHO) - getting rid of the numpad should leave room for those.

I will definitely not buy an offset (due to !@#!@# numpad which I really do not use) another Lenovo - 14" screens are just too small for me and 16:10 on the MBP is waaay ahead of the 16:9 aberrations.

On the wishful thinking side:  I' d get the Surface 15 3:2 IPS screen in a laptop (no 2in1 BS, no touch - matte) , full size (without numpad) centered keyboard with

- decent key travel (don' t aim to be "thinnest" - don' t go the MBP way, please )

- a magnetic power adapter attachment (latest MBP lacks that)

- mini-DP/HDMI output (usb-c-only is really lame IMHO, especially when backed by only 2x PCI-e lanes :-/)

- Ethernet port (yes, I still use that from time to time)

- easily serviceable battery (the opposite of Surface 15- " glue "  is really not an engineer' s friend) ; MBP got the 3 year applecare plan (both purchased by my employer) - Surface' s legendary low repairability (very non-eco-friendly)? scores are definitely not something to use as a target.

Get stuff right, Lenovo and I'll consider returning to the fold ;-)

As I don't have any use for the numeric keypad, I'd strongly prefer to have a centered keyboard and trackpad instead. In fact, that's one of the reasons why I didn't take any of the current 15-inch ThinkPads into consideration when making my last purchasing decision.

I also fully agree with ibmthink on his opinion regarding the keyboard of the T570.

I believe, an opinion poll would be more representative and quite interesting to look at. Pity the results of David Hill's survey on #RETRO never got public. Though I'm new to this forum, and may well be ignorant of local habits.

To add a voice of yet another customer: my notebook of dreams shall have

  1. Excellent keyboard w/o numpad. Current 6-row chicklet is fine with me, and as long as the keys may be reassigned, I can even skip the words of hatred to the *awesome* designer who put PrtSc key in the place of Context Menu key.
  2. TrackPoint. Red cap on black keyboard is, err, beautiful.
  3. At least 14" IPS screen
  4. At most 1.5 kg (2.2lbs)
  5. Tolerate careless handling (survive moderate falls in particular)

Currently my choice is pretty limited to either X1C or T4x0s. But my eyes don't improve with time, so a hypothetic bezelless T590s would be a welcome option. The footprint would still allow using the notebook in cramped places, like economy class on a plane.

Hi

I created an account here because a colleague notified me of this forum post. My team is responsible for deciding on equipment inventory for a mid-sized fintech company. We assign approx 350+ new laptops per year. A couple of years ago we moved grudgingly to dell xps 15 because about 15% of our users found the offset keyboard of the 15 inch thinkpads ergonomically uncomfortable. About 5% of our users actually found the keyboard unusable, typically aggravating carpal tunnel syndrome. Because of this we had to switch entirely to dell.

If the upcoming T580 were to offer a centered keyboard we would definitely change back at a flash.

Thanks

George

Please, please, please do this.  I've put off upgrading our company's 15" thinkpads for years because our employees don't want the number pad, and have complained about the few that we bought that had the number pad.

Much as we don't want to, we're now looking at HP's and Dells simply for this reason.

I'm T520/W530 user waiting for the right successor of these machines. W530 has enough power and memory for several more years, but it would be nice to have lighter laptop with 4K screen and TB3 ports. I hope there will be an option for centered keyboard on 15" ThinkPads soon.

YES YES YES. Keypads on modern laptops are a complete waste of space for workstations. Give me a P51s with centered keyboard and the 15 inch screen from the SurfaceBook please.
