Re: Who would like a 15 inch ThinkPad that has a centered keyboard and trackpad (no number pad)

Have you ever disassembled a Thinkpad? The keyboard is a self contained device plugged in to the mboard via ribbon cable. What that means is that it could be possible to produce 2 types of keyboard with and without a numpad. However, the touchpad location is not that easily adjustable. Also, the keyboard without the numpad would have some "dead space".

What’s wrong with “dead space” ?  It would make the laptop lighter and makes for a cleaner look

lighter by how much? 20 grams maybe? Shaving off couple of keys won't save you much weight. Also, that "dead space" will most likely be filled with plastic so that both full and numpad-less keyboard will fit in the same physical space on the laptop. That "cleaner look" is a subjective thing. I had T510 and T520 and they both had centered keyboard w/o numpad with a bit of space on either side of the keyboard. You see, for me, that looked awful. I prefer the full keyboard like on the t560.

Don't get me wrong - if Lenovo starts producing two separate sets of keyboards for Thinkpads with and without the numpad I'd actually call it innovative and a big sign of commitment to the client. However, I don't think it's plausible that it will ever happen as I don't think it's viable financially. Of course there might be a completely different solution. I'm just commenting on the idea of having option to choose or replace keyboard in thinkpads to one with or without numpad as 2 separate and user replacable parts.

You’re right, having dead space on either side would be a subjective opinion.  Myself, I’d rather the dead space.  But without the numpad provides the option of reducing the overall size of the unit.  You could also reduce the bezels which are rather large by today’s standards.  And the dead space could also be filled with some half decent top facing speakers.

I would love this form factor with modern parts. I still use it daily because of the use factor.

The best possbile thing to do with that dead space would be to get rid of it and the 16x9 screen and use 3x2 screen (e.g. SurfaceBook 2), simultaneously reducing the dead space, and providing a better screen for productive work.

Seriously this laptop design is easy, how do you get this so wrong lenovo? :)

It isn't dead space if the top part is used for decent speakers...and if the lower part provides a broad space to rest the wrists and help prevent carpal tunnel.

I seriously wonder whether thinkpad lab employs any experts in usability any more..it seems like the decisions are just made by the marketing or engineering department..

Due to the lack of option, i have already purchased a Logitech MX Anywhere 2S in anticipation of the irritating off centre touchpad on my forthcoming T580.

Please Lenovo, at least provide us with ONE 15.6" thinkpad that has no number pad!
