Why are there two Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controllers in a T14 AMD?

2020-12-04, 3:48 AM

One of them is connected to the ethernet port, what's the other one?

It's not for docking, which is USB based.

Thanks

@someotherguy

Found this explanation on reddit:

There actually are two Ethernet adapters in dockable ThinkPads; one "normal" that is either available via RJ45 or via special adapter (thinner ThinkPads), and another one that is wired only to dock adapter.

However it does not seem correct as the current docking is via usb which creates a separate usb ethernet adapter. So what is the second Realtek?

One is the RJ45 connector on the right side of the laptop, the other is Lenovo's special mini ethernet that sits next to the USB-C port inside the docking connector on the left side. It's used when you plug the laptop into the mechanical dock, and you can also get an adapter to use it with regular RJ45 plugs.

Thanks, the docs/specs don't seem to mention it, but this dock pic shows it:

By the way this also answers the question of which dock is better, mechanical or usb. The usb dock sends everything through a single usb-c connection, whereas mechanical splits across 2 usb-c and 1 ethernet, so has more than double the bandwidth.
