Wifi working in some public locations but not others

2015-03-24, 2:52 AM

I haave a four year old T420 and the WIFi works fine in most places but recently it has not worked at all in some public locations such as some coffee shops.  Is there a setting than can be altered to correct this issue?

Hi,

it seems the cause is the card in your laptop doesn't support "AC" protocol and/or 5 GHz frequency band those hotspots work in.

Hi,

Thanks for the information. Is there a way of confirming if my WIFI card
does not support "AC" protocol and/or 5 GHz frequency? Is there a way of
adjusting those settings?

Those features are hardware based, depend of the card model. So, they are not a card or driver settings.
Look at the Device Manager and provide wifi card model.

I suggest you ask the management/workers at one of the coffee houses where you can not connect what their protocol is. I find it hard to believe, unless done to restrict access, coffee houses are only using the AC protocol exclusively and the 5 Ghz band exclusively. They would eliminate 90% of the population and have many unhappy customers.

Here is the hardware part number: Intel(R) WiFi Link 1000 BGN

Any other thoughts when learning this hardware model?

Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 is the cheapest wifi adapter T420 supports (along with Realtek one). It supports BGN protocols and works in 2.4 GHz band.

I assumed most public WIFI connections were very universal and that the issues were with my unit.  That said, about 60% of public connections I've tried are fine but about 40% do not work.  Interestingly, the WIFI finds the access point but when I go to Firefox (or Explorer) it fails to find a server.

Is it always the same places where you have trouble, or is it hit or miss?

For reference, I occasionally have difficulty getting a connection, but it's usually during a busy meal hour, and I think the place has reached it's number of allocatable IPs on whatever router they're using.

Regards.

The issue is fairly consistant in hte same places.  For example, the problem always occurs at the same neighborhood coffee shop.  I recently performed a virus and malware scan which did find a few issues.  Even after sorting these out the problem is still present.  I'm about ready to give up. Does anyone have any new suggestions?
