WinDVD requires purchase?

2008-11-23, 4:09 AM

Hi,

I'm just shooting from the hip here.  Probably should do some more homework first, but it's late, and I'm too startled to figure this out just now.

I just tried to watch a DVD for the first time on this T400 running Vista business 64 bit.  WinDVD pops up a window titled "WinDVD4 Trial": the trial period for WinDVD4 expires in 30 days."  And invites me to purchase it.  Really?!?

Surely Lenovo wouldn't sell me a laptop with a dual-layer burner and then render it unusable for DVD viewing until I had purchased additional software?  That would suck.

Ah,

The version of WinDVD player that gets installed from the Lenovo VB64 media is the trial version.  For some reason.  The update in the T400 driver matrix @ the Lenovo site won't install on top of this version.  However, already present in C:\SWTOOLS\APPS\DVDPLAY is a version that only nags about registration.  Installing that one got things working as they should. (and maybe the update in the matrix would install on top of that one if necessary).

Odd that the installer doesn't actually install the correct version when it's already on the media.  I wonder what else needs to be installed manually...
