Windows 10 upgrade killed my bluetooth

2016-03-26, 19:15 PM

I upgraded my work laptop lenovo T540P from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. There were some issues like DisplayLink not working or a BSOD in Synatpics Touchpad driver which were all resolved by using the lenovo System Update to update the drivers.

But I have completely lost Bluetooth and the System Update hasn't helped with that. Some observations:

  • There is no Bluetooth section in Settings/Devices

  • Device Manager shows an "Unknown Device" under Other Devices, which has the error "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)". There is no Bluetooth device anywhere in device manager

  • Every run of Lenovo System Update prompts for installing "Intel Bluetooth Device Software - Initial Install - 10[64]", even after installing it

  • Installing Bluetooth drivers downloaded from Lenovo, outside the System Update tool didn't help either

  • Updating Chipset driver did not help, same behavior before and after
  • Lenovo Enterprise Support recommends reverting to Windows 8.1. Unfortunately my IT does not provide this option

If I buy an external Bluetooth dongle, will it be recognized or can I expect to have similar issues with it as well?

UPDATE: I forgot to mention earlier that there is nothing in my BIOS settings showing I have Bluetooth. Should there be something?

These should be the latest Intel Bluetooth drivers for the adapter in your system.   I would right click on the "Unknown Device" and uninstall/delete it, then run the Intel Driver Update Utility to see if it can install the correct driver(s) needed.    There may be other Intel drivers missing that it will apply that are needed.

Intel® Driver Update Utility

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html

If that fails, then try manually installing the latest drivers from intel shown below.

Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software for Windows® 10 (Version: 18.40.0 (Latest) Date: 3/17/2016)

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25833/Intel-PROSet-Wireless-Software-for-Windows-10

Intel® Wireless Display (Intel® WiDi)  (Version: 6.0.62.0 (Latest) Date: 3/2/2016)

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/63392/Intel-Wireless-Display-Intel-WiDi-

Note also that if you still cannot install the drivers, it could be a permission issue, so check with your IT to ensure that you have full admin rights to your laptop, and if not have them try to install using their login credentials.

Good Luck

I installed these but the result is stll the same -- No Bluetooth in settings, Unknown Device in device manager.

But there is something strange: even after running twice -- the second as Administrator -- Intel Driver Update Utility continues to say I need "Intel PROSet/Wireless Software for Bluetooth technology for Windows 10 64-bit (JP)". It finds my installed version to be 15.18.0.1 and reports the latest version to be 18.1.1525.1445. But "Programs and Features" report the version is installed along with other version.

Intel(R) PROSet/Wireless Software for Bluetooth(R) Technology: 17.0.1405.0464

Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R)                                                               18.1.1525.1445

Intel PROSet/Wireless Software                                                            18.40.0

Have you tried uninstalling from program and features,  and reinstalling?

Uninstall what? Everything? I am afraid that I will lose wifi as well, and wired connection is a pain in my home network so prefer to wait until I am in office tomorrow.

Thanks for your help.

Just the Intel software that reports the wrong version for starters.    Before uninstalling, download all the drivers that are needed for both the Wifi, LAN and Pro-Set so you have them on hand, but I would wait till tomorrow too, just in case.

Thanks for following up. I did uninstall 17.0.1405.0464 version yesterday but haven't tried uninstall/reinstall of the other.

Do you think a bluetooth dongle will work or will it have the same problem as well? I use a Jabra Motion Headset which comes with its own dongle that works fine.

More tomorrow :)
