fingerprint reader disappointing

2021-04-12, 14:53 PM

T15 gen2,   device 2 weeks old.

I am finding the fingerprint reader to be disappointing.  It fails so often, requiring me to enter PIN that I am thinking of lowering the frustration level by turning off the fingerprint reader and pin and go back to using password: stop expecting fingerprint reader to work.

I have tried removing and rescanning fingerprints 3 times.  Using 4 different fingers. Drivers are up to date, according to lenovo vantag and System Update.

Are others having the same bad performance of fingerprint reader?

Any tricks for making it more reliable?

Hi astro46!

Welcome to community forums

Can you send a screenshot of the system information, with the BIOS version and OS version on it?

Try uninstalling the driver under the device manager and restart the computer for the driver to reinstall itself?

It is under the Biometrics devices. Right-click on it then choose uninstall.

Let us know how it goes.

btw:  I have removed all readings, and started over.  we shall see.  typically they work ok for a few days, then decreasing recognition.

The technology never works very well for me, and it is not limited to Lenovo.  I assume my fingerprints are less sharp than they were when I was younger.  Also, I have worked the abrasives and strong chemicals; I'm sure that doesn't help.  If your fingers are very dry, that affects the process as well

I had high hopes for this reader, since I got to use the fingerprint reader in a E15,  which is integrated into the power button. That worked every time. I was impressed. perhaps the one in the T15 is different or works differently because of its placement.

For me, i find that it is worse if my fingers are at all damp.   this time i did the scans with fingers a bit damp, to see if that makes a difference.  i'll see what happens with it over a few days.  in the past it fails more as the days go by.

my iphone has a fingerprint reader, which is so unreliable that I turned it off, to alleviate the frustration.  if fact (i know, bad) i have no password on it at all.  i got tired of entering a code every time i looked at it.

its mostly failing again.  fails with one finger,  try another, fails, then demands PIN,  or maybe try a third, before demanding PIN.

I see. Since it is new, try a factory reset. Backup your files If the issue persists, call support at 1-800-932-0465 for further assistance. They're open 24/7

factory reset? as in all my installed programs and settings get wiped?

not the only issue with this unit.

I have macrium reflect imaging software installed, which creates a dual boot with win10, so in case of disaster it can restore an image without booting into win10.  at first the dual boot screen was simply black.  I figured out the cmd prompt to get the dual boot to appear, but it remains as legacy, not modern.  no commands seem to work to create the modern, graphical, boot screen.  i have macrium installed on several other units.  none have had this issue.

won't factory issue just reinstall the same, perhaps defective, image that may be currently the problem?

if i am forced to reinstall everything (for a third time!!  unit before this was returned because the integrated camera was missing)  i'd rather return the unit and have it replaced.
