If you made the recovery disc set you can recover from that and if the recovery partition is still intact you can try holding down the ThinkVantage button to power the system up and boot into recovery. Otherwise you'll need to order a recovery disc set.

Or, just download a Windows 7 ISO; burn it to a disk, and do a clean install.

If you want the easy way to find every utility your machine needs Lenovo has that solution center utility; but keep in mind that you'll likely need to install the drivers for your wireless card first so that that utility can find the updates and drivers.  Make a note of which one you have (or bought) so that you install the right ones.

You can also customize your install by picking and choosing from that matrix whichever utilities you want.  If you do this, I recommend leaving out Intel RST, because it's got a bit of a problem with constant hard disk access that won't ever let the drive spin down (also happens with SSDs).

A recovery disc set would be best for him. And the Intel RST bugs have long since been worked out. BTW, SSD drives don't spin down, they have no moving parts. I have been using the Intel RST drivers with my ThinkPad ever since I got it with no issues. I have both an SSD and a HDD in the machine and the HDD is is standby mode (not spinning) right now.

Please try F10 at start up, the saved image should be usable. If not just order the recovery discs.

I don't think they cost a lot and could come in handy in the future.

I was under the impression that installing Windows from a CD wouldn't work, because you can't activate a new Windows installation with a Lenovo OEM product key (the product key is only capable of activating a Lenovo OEM system image).

Am I correct? Does anyone have experiences with this on Windows 7? This is what happened to me when attempting to reinstall Vista on my T61 with a retail Vista installation CD.

You can but you have to call Microsoft to activate and it can be a hassle. You also lose all the Enhanced Experience opimizations and the recovery partition. Although you get some of the EE stuff back when you install the drivers Lenovo provides.
