g1uj12uc.iso fails with reboot

2012-10-03, 20:45 PM

I have a T430i which is currently running BIOS version 1.20. I copied g1uj12uc.iso to a CD and tried the reboot. The update starts fine  and PC Dos boots. I selected 2 to carry out the update. After answering the various questions in the affirmative I gave the go-ahead for the update to proceed. The screen goes black and then the machine reboots. So far so bad. I tried this several times, but each time the same thing happens.

0) I have run setup and used F9 F10 to ensure the existing BIOS is in a default state.

1) I am not running windows.

2) I have a custom boot image.

Is this just an issue with poor software from Lenovo or am I forced to reinstall windows before I can update the bios? If the latter then the software is even poorer.

It does not sound like you actually made a CD from the image. You say you COPIED it to a CD. You don't copy ISO files. They're and image to burn a CD from.

You do not need Windows to update BIOS from the bootable CD like what you are doing.

Have you updated BIOS using this exact same process in the past?

It almost sounds like your CD is corrupted somehow.  Could you try burning another CD?

Edit:

what does this mean  "2) I have a custom boot image."

@tripplec...

the OP posted:

"The update starts fine  and PC Dos boots. I selected 2 to carry out the update. After answering the various questions in the affirmative I gave the go-ahead for the update to proceed."

which sure sounds like the screens of a BIOS update session. if the iso were merely copied to the cd/dvd (i know that is what the OP posted), then the machine would have booted the hdd/ssd or thrown a 'no os found' error. this sounds like something going wrong with the update, but at least it isn't bricking the machine...

regards.

@someotherguy...

re: custom boot image. w-a-g, a custom bitmap for the boot screen?

edit: and it's a great question, someotherguy.

i don't claim deep knowledge about the BIOS flash processes under the hood, but if the flasher is looking at the currently installed BIOS and is seeing some kind of a mismatch (checksum?) because of a changed boot graphic, and not recognizing it, would it simply abort the flash? that would certainly be preferable to a partial/failed flash that bricks the machine.

There was no indication what he was running since it was not windows. But whether the CD already had other things on it or previous bootable from something else.

Too vague but he did not burn that image ISO file onto a new CD or DVD as required then it will never work. If it was correclty done then either the file is not for the machine or the media burn is corrupt.

Anyway he'll have to figure it out. If he understands this in the first place.

I copied the image directly to a CD; the resultant CD booted to PC Dos. I didn't copy the image to a data CD,

ok. so you burned the iso as an image to the cd, correct?

as someotherguy, suggested, can you burn a second one to be sure that the first isn't simply partially corrupt? maybe even download the .iso again?

regards.

Re: g1uj12uc.iso fails with reboot

I made a bootable image from the iso. The CD was completely blank before I started.

The custom image I mentioned in the OP was a gif image that replaced Lenovo's boot screen image in the BIOS. I did that when flashing 1.20 and that is working fine.

The latest ISO for 2.05 correctly recognizes that I have a custom boot screen image and asks if I wish to retain it (I answered yes to that).

If it matters, I am running Arch Linux X64 on the whole of the disk. I am using legacy ie MBR boot to boot an MSDOS style partition with grub2.

all sounds good.

seems like the flasher is aborting on something, though. it shouldn't matter, but maybe pull the hdd and try falshing again?

regards.
