installing new different windows and there is no cd-key !!

2017-04-18, 22:56 PM

Hi there..

I received a new ThinkPad T460 Model:  20FMS05K2Y, I upgraded the SSD internal disk to 512GB instead of the factory installed 256GB. the laptop cam with pre-installed win10 pro version. Now i am installing new win 8.1 Pro version, I should use the Key came with the new laptop but unfortunately I do not have it and can not find it!!! I searched the whole community but did not find a solution or a similar case. Actually i can find removing the cd-key label from the laptops back and embedded it within BIOS/UEFI is not a wise decision and causing a lot of troubles for many users as you can see from many questions and cases sent to this Forum.
Please I need to have a windows key that can work with win10 , win 8.1 and possibly win 7. buying any new laptops with win 10 licensed is backward compatible with any old windows versions needed ..
I can also Provide my S/N if needed.

Appreciate your help.

Amr.

The windows 10 license is in the BIOS.  There is no key; that's the way windows 10 works on a new computer.  I think windows 10 pro has downgrade rights for windows 7, but I don't know about 8.1.

You do have downgrade rights to Windows 8.1 pro from Windows 10 Pro per lenovo, but I would stick with Windows 10pro over 8.1pro myself.

Skip the part (click on I do not have a key) where it asks for a license during the Windows installation and it will proceed, and then once installed it should detect the licence stored in the BIOS and activate.

If you still have the old HD, you can also put it back in, create recovery media on a USB key, and then use it to reinstall as well.    You can also use a program called ShowKeyPlus to grab the product key from the BIOS and save it to a file.

If you have been signing in to your outlook / hotmail account in windows 10 the licens is attached to that account so you need to login and migrate the outlook / hotmail account with your local account on your machine.

That did fix the issue for me.

Here is the way to find the setting:
