memory upgrade for new lenovo T480

2018-03-01, 8:22 AM

I've just purchased online a brand new lenov thinkpad T480. However, I would like to buy some additional memory to get the full 32 GB. I wasn't able to find all the details (unbuffered or not) on the lenovo page so I that wanted to double check with you guys. Does this mem work for the T480?

https://www.digitec.ch/en/s1/product/kingston-valueram-1x-16gb-ddr4-2400-so-dimm-260-pin-memory-6068169?tagIds=76

Many thanks for your help guys!

Got your point here. For a standard systems like ThinkPad or IdeaPad for example, Unbuffered Memories are usually a better choice. Buffered memories are normally used in Servers and Workstations.

ASFAIK for DDR4 -2400 Memories CAS Latency should be some where around 17 16 15.

Thanks for your reply. That's indeed the information I found as well. IMHO however, they don't cover some essential information like unbuffered / buffered and CAS latency.

Companies that sell after market memory usually have a "RAM finder" page on their website that lets you look up the appropriate modules for each make/model of computer. Usually they provide more information about RAM specs than the OEM, including chip timing, voltage, etc. You could use their specs to confirm such details.

I'm pretty sure Crucial does show this level of detail (e.g. on http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/advisor) but their site has been unresponsive today.

My goodness, you don't need 32GB Memory, 16 GB is WAY enough

buffered or ECC will not work.  The link you provided is for "Kingston Value RAM".  Most brands work, but items with the word "value" in the name have a poor history of compatibility.  I would avoid it.

That's highly dependant on your use case.

I've regularly filled up all of my 16GB and had to suffer heavy swapage.

Can I install 16gb memory with CL14 in T480 (i5-8350U)? By default it supports CL17. Will it work fine?

I want to install  ddr4-2666 МГц (HyperX Impact 16GB DDR4 SODIMM PC4-21300 HX426S15IB2/16)  With CL14-16-16

Welcome to the forum.

CL14 should work fine. While the lower the better, i.e. CL14 is faster than CL17, you won't notice the difference in practice.
