The question would be is that always occuring with all DVD??? Are you watching original DVD or pirated versions??? Loud noises and shakes are usually associated with a unbalanced DVD disc, such as those cheap pirated DVD. If it is occuring in all original dvd disc then, the drive motor mechanism or laser diode actutator mechanism or even the laser head assembly itself (poorly aligned and have trouble picking up signal, so it constantly goes through a seeking cycle) are bad, in which case it is advisable you call Lenovo support to get a dvd drive replacement sent to you.

Yes, with all the dvd. The original and pirated version both type of dvd. I will contact customer service again tomorrow. THank u for your reply. I also have two more questions.

1. My computer goes to hibernation even after i set it to "never". What should I do?

2. My computer should show 160 gb but when I check it out it saids  SW preload " Space free 112" and " Total 137 GB"

was I looking at the right place?

The technician told me that it is but how come it doesn't say 160 GB .

Thank you

1. So your computer is going to hibernation??? Okay firstly, for each power or battery setting they have their own hibernation setting, if you change from one setting to another hibernation mode will change.

2. When HDD manufacturer say 160 gig, they report that space in 1 gb= 1000mb, while OS recognises 1 gb = 1024 mb, so there is there the 160 x 24 mb gone already after formatting. In addition Lenovo Thinkpad true to the Thinkpad tradition loads the OS and various drivers in a hidden service partition for quick reload later if your computer ever run into trouble later. So there is another 15 or so gig gone from the formatted HDD. Apart from that is Lenovo have a software called Rescue and Recovery, which backs up all your computer software into your HDD, which is extremely useful if you ever run into computer trouble like virus or anything.

However, you have to watch the backup schedule with Rescue and Recovery to make sure it don't do too many, so go into that program in Thinkvantage software suite in Program lists, and delete those backup that you don't need, you probably have one or two backups already, delete the one you think you don't need to free some HDD space.

In, addition make sure you burn yourself a copy of the Recovery Media just in case your laptop HDD fail unexpectedly for some reason and needs a total hidden service partition reformat. You can even upgrade your HDD with larger one down the road, and use this disk to load your hidden partition and subsequent OS/drivers.

3. The drive is easy to remove, this is one of the highlight of modular design, there is a light associated with the DVD drive, there is little switch where you can move, flick that forward, and a pull out lever comes out under the DVD, pull on that and your drive is free. When you want to insert it, just push your drive back and return the lever back.

Re: t 400 optical drive make funny loud noises when watching movie!!

I received  a new optical drive today. I immediately inserted a movie to see if I would hear any funny loude whineing noises. Well, I didn't. I watch the entire movie with no loud noises. I turn off the computer and when I came home I decided to test it out again, for good measure. And it was whineing and buzzing like the old op.drive. Urgggg! I pick up the labtop and tilted to the left and it made a spinning sound, I tilted to the right and it was buzzing and spinning sound again. I then open the drive and it was very loose. I took it out and put it back it and open the drive again and it still is very loose and unstable.

Okay, after that I put in the same movie and that **bleep** noise stopped!

Should I do a rescue optical drive test ? Or should I just send this driver back and get another one AGAIN?

Thank you.

two tabs at once???? why???

2008-09-04, 4:48 AM

Too many issues with this labtop. Another problem with my t400 is every time I log on to the internet , it automatically open up two tabs.
Then I have to close one of the tab down.

How do I resove this issue and not have two tabs open up at the same time when I go on the internet?

Thanks again.

That is uncharacteristic of ultrabay slim drive. You can call Lenovo and see whether it is drive problem, i think you should make sound recording of the noise and post it on the net and let me have a listen. I got several drive that i have.

When you say it opens two tab, you probably set your internet explorer or mozilla homepage as having two pages.
