t470 downgrade to windows 7

2017-05-08, 15:14 PM

We're trying to downgrade from windows 10 to 7. When I get Windows setup screen to install, there are no drives listed. I tried changing the boot options from uefi to legacy, the opposite and mixed. What am I missing here?

Hello and welcome,

You're missing an NVMe driver - if you have an NVMe SSD main drive.

Gen 6 or gen 7 processor?  You probably know there won't be any ongoing  Win 7 support for Kaby Lake.

Ah ha, that would explain it. I'll do some independant research to get it work. Unfortunately for us, we have some apps that only work on Win 7.

Most likely USB 3.0 drivers issue.

I encountered this problem trying to install Windows 7 on a T460p.

I was doing a USB installation, if you're installing from a stick then the USB 3.0 drivers are not present in the Windows 7 media.

What I did was download the "Windows 7 USB 3.0 Creator Utility" from Intel

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25476/Windows-7-USB-3-0-Creator-Utility

You basically need to extract the boot.wim and install.wim from your stick's sources directory, then add the x86 or x64 directory included in that download and then transfer back the files to your stick.

If that doesn't work you can search for a similar method for your NVMe Drive, my T460p have a regular PNY SSD

No I knew about that issue. This is specific to the brand new t470 SSD drives. I had to manually extract the hdd NVME drivers from Samsung into a folder on the USB drive I was using for win 7 set up and manually load it.

Could you explain this to me? In which folders would I have to put the Samsung drivers? Thanks!

Re: t470 downgrade to windows 7

Can someone PLEASE provide a solution for the issue below? There is an urgent need to solve this asap!

Case: I have some T470 laptops (20JNS16901) with SSD (INTEL SSDPEKKF256G7L) that came with w10 preinstalled

I need to install Windows7 in these machines and after numerous failed attempts this is still not possible.

I've been trying to install Windows 7 (in order to export Windows7 SSD drivers and apply it to the rest machines) via bootable USB, but it says that it cannot find CD/DVD drivers. (referring to the SATA drivers used for the HDD)

Can someone PLEASE provide clear instructions on how to overcome this?

Also, is there any official statement from Lenovo mentioning that T470 is not supported with W7?

Any help would be sincerely appreciated

Kind Regards

alex

Re: t470 downgrade to windows 7

Hi,

In reverse order, Lenovo does support Win 7 on the T470 in the Sky Lake version.  Win 7 isn't supported by Lenovo or Microsoft for the Kaby Lake machines.  20JN machines seem to be Sky Lake so that part looks OK - but please verify that you have a gen-6 CPU.

The missing CD/DVD driver message usually comes early in the process and is due to missing USB 3.0 drivers.  Later on a NVMe driver is needed to access the SSD.  It's necessary to inject drivers in to the install media (if using MS media) and it's not a pretty process:

How to prepare the Windows 7 installation ISO image with USB3.0 driver and NVM Express (NVMe) driver

I've gone through this (not with a T470) and it's do-able with patience.  Some personal notes:

I'm trying to do the same on a X1 Carbon 5G, installing W7Pro from USB3 on an UEFI/GPT partition. I get to the point where Windows 7 installs, but after the first reboot I end up with a Blue Screen. Any ideas?
