Advice Request: Ordered T590 - Should I Have Gotten the P52?

2019-05-31, 0:23 AM

Need some affirmation from the experts (assuming you all are....) that the system will perform phenominally, or I do need to cancel the order and go for the bigger power of P52?

My knowledge of hardware - 3.5 out of 10. I know the parts, but not how they all specifically work.

Ordered the T590 after making concessions that I didn't "need" to get the P52 becuase I don't run engineering or 3D programs.

My mom is a software engineer, who works remotely, and is currently travelling the US and Mexico, moving many times per year. Two years ago, her company gave her a T480 to work with and she's still using it.

As my only computer - I assume the T series will be good enough?

My usage:

Heavy internet browser use - searching through the realtor MLS system, dotloop, docusign, Adobe Pro, etc...

Need several websites up and running at once.

Uploading and downloadng documents onto my computer and regularly into different websites.

Emailing files several times a day.

Light stock trading using TD Ameritrade software.

Personal and business financal Excel use.

Document and PDF creation/editing.

Need bigger (15.6) screen to have 2 documents/sites displayed at the same time

Weight is a small factor, but I've got no problem with 5-6lbs.

Price - $2,500-ish is comfortable for me because my entire financial life is through the laptop. I don't like to go too cheap on tools.

Gaming: Spider Solitaire :)

Goals:

Fast performance.

Reliable, sturdy laptop that can take traveling.

Possibility to last to 10 years while still performing well.

Price difference between the 2 isn't a big concern.

T590 ordered - top processor available(1.8ghz quad core?), 24gb memory, 500-something SSD, Windows Pro.

P52 desired - 2.7(or so)ghz processor, 32 gb RAM, 500-ish SSD, Windows Pro.

Did I make a good chocie with the T590?

 Thanks...

Based on what you wrote, you would not benefit much from Quadro/Xeon.  However, having used a T590 with i7 for a while, I'd suggest a 'Core' processored P52 over it.  The T590 is reasonably quick, but can always be better, and the base Intel graphics, while decent, is no better than that (mine has the optional MX-250 for the heavy duty work.)

The 'base' i7-8750H of the P52 is significantly better (30%) than the i7 on the T590, plus it has UHD 630 graphics, which is better (17%) than the UHD 620 on the T590 (very important since you're not ordering discrete graphics.)  The i7-8850H is barely better, and not worth the premium unless you are adding discrete graphics (only an option with this processor.)  The display on the P52 at also better at 300 nits, at least on paper, I have zero complaints about the T590 display.

The size is a good desktop replacement, if I traveled more than a little, I'd want a 14" model, and connect a FHD monitor (on a high stand behind the laptop - use both displays) at home and at work.

Different people have different opinions.  I didn't see anything in your requirements that would benefit from discrete graphics so I would recommend the simpler and lighter T590.  The P52 needs the larger and heavier 170-watt A/C adapter.  I would probably suggest an i7 processor for the T590 and get the maximum memory.  I think a 10-year life is not likely for any machine.  A 10 year old machine now would be a T61 and no T61 would be sufficient for much of anything today.

Good point about the size and weight of P52.  The ThinkPad P1 with i7-8750H has all the advantages of the P52 without the weight for the same cost, and includes the Quadro P1000.  And a 4k HDMI 2.0 port.

Good points on both opinions...

Which makes me want to stay with the original purchase of the T590 to see how it goes...

I didn't go with the P1 because I really want the number pad. I bought a USB plug-in 10 key pad, but it's annoying and I stopped using it. My wife's Lenovo has the 10 key pad and she loves it.

Well - long story short - the first T590 that shipped, sucked. DOA until I reset it about 50 times, then waited overnight to try again - and then left click button didn't work. Then the trackpoint froze.

HOWEVER - semi-success story with CS - they gave me a new laptop, same specs, and a small discount.

Just got the second new T590 today and it's been working great.

The more I researched, the more I learned the T590 will be fine. If my real estate business and trading pays off, and this computer can't handle it, then I'll just get a new one again :)

So far so good though.

It's performing very well. No complaints on the performance at all.... I was nervous about the processor speed, being "only" 1.9, but it's been fine.

Yesterday, I was in 2 Word docs, 2 spredsheets, 3 PDFs, web browsing with several tabs, and a bunch of foldes open all at the same time putting together some presentations, crunching numbers, making graphs... There was no lag in performance while switching out between programs.

Yes, I wish I went more "powerful" just because I would like it, but I don't think there's any serious compromise on perfomance for the lighter machine.

After using a 2011 Alienware for 8 years which was a giant brick that I didn't like packing up, the lightness and thinness of this T590 is awesome. I really like the portability of it.

Screen - I don't get the "washed out" thing on it. I'm not a gamer and everything looks good to me. Again though, I'm not a photographer, or artist. I can't tell if I'm missing anything. Screen performs well for me.
