Boot to Safe Mode returns Error 0210:Stuck Key 42

Lenovo Thinkpad T500 Model 2242-CTO running Windows XP Professional

There is no external keyboard.

System and Driver Update has been done

I need to boot to "safe mode with networking" in order to try cleaning off some malware.

I start the computer and begin pressing [F8] per instructions.  It cycles through the Thinkpad "press the ThinkVantage button" screen, then beeps twice and provides a black screen stating

Error

0210: Stuck Key 42

Press <F1> to Setup

Press <F1> and I can't find anything about Safe Mode there.

Setup doesn't get get me into Safe Mode so I [esc] and system continues to reboot.

I have tried waiting to press [F8] until the Windows splash screen starts.  No Safe Mode occurs.

I have tried pressing the blue [Thinkvantage] button.  No Safe Mode is found.

Does anybody know why this is happening?  Does anybody have a way to actually boot into safe mode?

Instead of just pressing f-8 try tapping f-8 in about 1 sec intervals.

Re: Boot to Safe Mode returns Error 0210:Stuck Key 42

I recently tried cleaning my keyboard and mouse buttons (sprayed alcohol, followed by canned air).

I had removed the keyboard to do this...

After reinstalling all the stuff, my keyboard kept BEEPing at me while typing things fast. Mostly l'm getting this BEEP when two keys are pushed at once or close together... BUT ONLY when it's including the diagonal column of  F10, 9, O, L, ., etc...

When I restart the computer, I get an BIOS error message telling me Error... Stuck Key 42.

I've tried re-cleaning the keyboard, but no fix. Lenovo: THIS IS SUPER ANNOYING; **bleep**!

Re: Boot to Safe Mode returns Error 0210:Stuck Key 42

This is how I solved this problem.I downloaded  EasyBCD from Neosmart and installed it. I used it to set the OS choice to be available for a few minutes while booting up. In my case I chose two seconds and that way,  safe mode was available again as a boot option.

You need to start jabbing F8 after the ThinkPad POST screen disappears. Otherwise, it thinks the F8 key is stuck.

T410s and "ERROR: Stuck Key 42" problem

Hi everyone,

I bought a brandnew T410s about 2 months ago, and now I have a problem with the keyboard. Whenever I want to boot into Safe Mode by pressing F8, a message appears on the black screen that reads "ERROR: Stuck Key 42". To try fixing it, I have tried pressing and holding F8, pressing it repeatedly, etc... basically following some of the suggestions on the solutions that I have found so far on the net. However, the error still cannot be fixed.

Does anyone have a similar experience? How can I resolve this issue without replacing the keyboard?

Thank you all and best regards,

Re: T410s and "ERROR: Stuck Key 42" problem

@hoangluong,

this sounds more like an issue with the keyboard, like a stuck key or a short circuit in the keyboard circuit board.

you should call up Lenovo warrant service 131 426, they should be able to get you a new keyboard sent out to your business or home address. you can replace it yourself within about 5 minutes.

Re: T410s and "ERROR: Stuck Key 42" problem

Thank you very much, lead_org. I have never replaced a keyboard myself.

If possible, could you please show me how (a link?)
