CPU throttled due to high temperature at 45° C

2018-07-06, 1:45 AM

Just got my T470s and installed Fedora 28.

On every start I'm getting messages about too high CPU temperatures, and that the CPU was throttled.

As soon as the system is up, I'm running `sensors` and they report the cores to be at 45° C.

Something seems wrong.

I read another thread about enabling "BIOS assist" for Thunderbolt, but my BIOS doesn't have this option.

Any ideas? Thanks a lot!

If you have not done so already, I would recommend that you update to the latest device drivers and BIOS and see if that resolves the issue because I know that BIOS version 1.42 fixed a similar problem, but it was released in October of 2017, so I would think that your new system would already have it installed unless it was warehoused for a long period of time.

Before updating the BIOS, make sure the battery is charged, the AC plugged in, and disable any 3rd party Startup Items before rebooting and installing the update.

Good Luck,

Thanks very much for your answer.

Indeed I have already done that upgrade to 1.27 last week, when I got the laptop.

It was reported that there were issues with the fan not turning off after resume, I don't have that issue.

I am on Linux, so I think installing a current driver version is not applicable. Kernel 4.17.3-200.fc28.x86_64 should usually handle the CPU well.

Or is there drivers I could install additionally?

Yesterday I installed TLP, I booted this morning and I didn't see the throttled CPU messages anymore.

When I check lscpu, my core is again at 800 MHz, probably to save battery. I'll see what happens when I plug the power chord.

I'll report. Thanks.

Actually the throttling is a known Linux issue on several laptops, which is tracked here:
