CPU usage 100% and high temperature

2016-08-24, 20:50 PM

Hi all.

I have 2 Lenovo thinkpad T410s with i5 M520 with 8 GB RAM and i use Windows 7 Pro x64. For about 6 months my laptops have started to have high temperature in idle (75-85 Celsius degree) and when I tried to play a game temperature riched more than 95 Celsius degree and the CPU went up to 100% and the windows stuck until the temperature fell a bit. Than, I cleaned both laptops of dust and I changed diferents thermal paste without any modification in laptops' functionality. I reinstalled windows and i installed all the programs from lenovo for several times.

Now the laptops are almost imposible to use. If i start more than 3 tabs in browser the temperature goes up and CPU usage goes to 100%. In task manager when CPU usage is 100% physical memory never goes more than 4GB.

Who can tell me what can i do.  At work I have a T420s and I have the same problem with the temperature... is imposible to touch the back of the laptop.

Thank you!

Since this issue affects both ThinkPads and you've tried the most likely maintenance (fan cleaning and thermal repaste) without success I'd start to suspect a software issue. Run Windows Task Manager to see what processes are using the CPU. (Click the CPU heading in the Processes tab to show the heaviest users at the top.)

What processes are using CPU cycles when the system is "idle" and also when playing games or running a browser? That should give you clues about what software may be causing problems.

Also, do you recall if you installed any new software about 6 months ago when the problem began to occur?
