Cannot boost for Windows 7 installation

Hello,

I am using a T450s. I want to install an additional OS Windows 7 but unable to do so. (I am using Windows Pro 10, but have the intention to install an additional one)

I tried with:

 - Rufus (https://rufus.akeo.ie/)

 - Lenovo support website (https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/sf13-t0008)

but still facing the same problem:

1st, I hit "Enter" then "F12" as instruction on screen

2nd, I choose boot from the USB but nothing happen. The screen just flash then remain at the menu of boosting devices.

I hope you can help me.

Thank you for reading this post

Re: Cannot boost for Windows 7 installation

I'm afraid it's impossible to install win7 as a second OS with win10 jointly, in dual boot mode. Because of boot loaders incompatibility.

Also, some tweaks might need with win7 image to install in the UEFI mode.

Probably, the simplest way is to install win7 on the virtual machine.

Re: Cannot boost for Windows 7 installation

Assuming you currently have windows 10 and windows 7 installed on separate partitions;

You could install linux on yet another partition:

http://www.ubuntu.com/

and then the installation should identify your other installations and put it in a (grub) boot loader, which will make you able to choose between ubuntu, windows 10 and windows 7 on boot (hopefuly Smiley Happy).

I have not tested this and I'm sure lenovo doesn't support it Smiley Wink

Re: Cannot boost for Windows 7 installation

idleman,

nice solution.

But, there are tens of threads on our forum (and great number of ones outside) when users installed Ubuntu on the machine with win7/8 installed and as result weren't able to access the BIOS setup, to boot into the OS in the Legacy BIOS mode installed, to boot from the external USB device. Because of Ubuntu rewrites boot variables in the VSS.

Worst, there isn't solution on the Lenovo support site or community KB for this issue. BIOS reflashing isn't available in this case if Ubuntu is the only OS that is capable to boot. But even reflashing process doesn't resolve VSS issue if the customer doesn't know how to reset VSS. Not every laptop model might be affected, but a big lot. Not every user can troubleshoot.
