Conexant Audio Driver for Vista 4.92.5 and XP 3.64.6 - Resolution of SmartAudio Installation Issues

2009-06-04, 19:32 PM

After installing this new version of the audio driver posted on the Lenovo's website, I am getting this error whenever I start the SmartAudio application from the control panel.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver but no avail.

I am currently running Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit.

Anyone has the same issue?

Thanks.

Re: Conexant Audio Driver 4.92.5.0 - Problem with SmartAudio

2009-07-01, 5:36 AM

@EricThorniley, swg0101, and others here and elsewhere.  TO ALL--

32-BIT FIXED!

Many, many thanks to all of you.  You have coaxed victory out of Lenovo's broken driver installer.  Given the persistent and reckless nature of this issue, your solution is simple to navigate, and it just works.

Wanted to post a wrap-up report so that others struggling with this demon can walk through it and confirm the successful outcome of an "enhanced" install that relies on the now-available fix.  No need to wait for Lenovo to emerge from the fog…

To review: The flawed Conexant driver package file at the root of this month-long adventure is 6ea110ww.exe; it's currently presented by ThinkVantage System Update.  (But don't take it there; it will "install" but fail to load; worse, it will break a prior, working release.)  This driver package file (about 22.5MB) is available for manual download here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70595

Also, note that installation of Microsoft Hotfix KB888111 (Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver version 1.0a) is a prerequisite for the Conexant driver.  Although this Hotfix is included in SP3 for Windows XP, many have avoided SP3 for a variety of reasons.  If needed, KB888111 is available on the above driver download page.

After downloading the broken package, simply download swg0101's patcher kit and follow his brief instructions in post #15; this solution is based on EricThorniley's great insight in post #13.

Note that this fix is for 32-bit OSes.  A similar 64-bit fix should be forthcoming but has not as yet appeared.

This driver version is:  Vista v4.92.5.0 / XP v3.64.6.0, dated 05/29/09, for the following models:
- ThinkPad R400, R500 (Note:  T400s is NOT included)
- ThinkPad T400, T500
- ThinkPad W500, W700, W700ds
- ThinkPad X200, X301

The prior release (the first one to include Conexant's SmartAudio II, a new, separate applet) was Vista v4.92.2.0 / XP v3.64.2.50, dated 04/13/09.  The earlier version, now superseded, did install correctly, at least from a manual download, but had a few bugs. Here are highlights of the new driver's readme file, 6ea110ww.txt (also available at the above Lenovo/IBM URL):

CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE

Version 4.92.5.0 (Windows Vista) / 3.64.6.0 (Windows XP)

[Important updates]

Nothing.

[New functions or enhancements]

- Enhanced device driver functions.

- Corrected Beam-forming function implementation on SmartAudio II application.

By this correction, added support for ThinkPad X200 Tablet.

(Incidentally, "beam-forming" signal processing has to do with mic pickup optimization, especially for VOIP communications.  Info at http://www.conexant.com/vpa )

[Problem fixes]

- Corrected the name of support device from "Conexant High Definition Audio" to  "Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221".

- Fixed an issue where the built-in microphone never be off when an external  microphone was connected. This might cause reverberation.

- Fixed an issue where microphone volume level was too low.

                                                 --------

It's unclear exactly what the "enhanced driver functions" are, as the console for Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 (launched from Control Panel) appears virtually identical to that of the prior release.  We note that, as the current version is dated 05/29/09, few, if any, recently purchased ThinkPads likely include the latest version within the disk image; even the prior release, dated 04/13/09, may not have made it to the standard Lenovo image.  Thus, for the vast majority of ThinkPad current R-, T-, W-, and X-series users, upgrading the driver suite at this time is the only way to obtain the features of SmartAudio II.

The following key-files manifest applies to the ThinkPad T400/T500 (and likely, the other listed models) running WinXP/SP2+ (32-bit):

Successful "Enhanced" Install,_WinXP/SP2 v3.64.6.0, 06/30/09

Conexant File List (Win Vista will differ):

                                     ("built by: WinDDK")

Conexant File              v2.0.39.0        N/A      C:\WINDOWS\system32\UCI32A39.dll

2) SmartAudio Console

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> (Red) SmartAudio icon -> Settings tab

3) SmartAudio II Console

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> (Black) SmartAudio icon -> Click on triangle, Upper Rt -> About

Codec Model                CX20561

Audio Driver Version    3.64.6.0

HD Audio API Version   1.0.29.0        (Newly reported by this release)

SmartAudio Version     6.0.34.0

So, what do you get in the Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 and how does it sound?!

The SA II console (alas, a gaudy interface) wakes up the Conexant CX20561 audio/voice processor-codec and provides access to several effects not otherwise available to the vanilla Conexant applet (SmAudio.exe).  Highlights include advanced VOIP voice optimization; a headphone-gain limiter; a 10-band equalizer (5 presets, plus custom settings); a 16-band x 13-segment bar-graph display; and two interesting sound-space controls: one with variable "wide-speaker" effects, and one with variable "3-D."

While ThinkPad's postage-stamp speaker drivers are not quite the home-theater system of one's dreams, SmartAudio II can improve the octave-to-octave musical balance, and usefully enhance the apparent sound stage.  Deployed carefully, the combo of these effects can make nearly unacceptable laptop sound almost listenable (at modest levels, of course).  Resource overhead is modest and hey, the price is recession-proof!

NOTE TO LENOVO:

Posting an untested, defective driver package (let alone leaving it in place for weeks), especially on ThinkVantage System Update, is manifestly unacceptable.  Please take down Vista v4.92.5.0 / XP v3.64.6.0 forthwith, return to the prior version while you fix it, and add a note of apology.  Over the past month, the user base has wasted countless hours scavenging forums worldwide and attempting to reconcile an ill-advised and avoidable mess.  In the future, do some basic installation/viability testing, especially on "spousal" machines, before subjecting our community to driver terror.  We thank you.

Way to go, guys, let's spread it around.  Will post a link to this page on the ThinkPads.com forum.

 --BAM

Sorry for a long post and any formatting glitches.  Tough to get a forensic report to look snappy.

Hello swg0101,

Please tell us your type, model number, not S/N, and used OS and SP please

If SP2 for Vista is installed, uninstall it. SP2 is not fully supported yet.

I just uninstalled the SmartAudio application and used the old one from the old driver and applied it to the new driver.

It seemed to work fine now. :)

Hi!

I've also the same problem with newest drivers. But I would like to use them, as they fix the beam forming error!

Will be there SP2 Conexant drivers?

Did you try using the old SmartAudio setup but keeping the new drivers?
