Counterfeit T430 (70+) battery?

I bought a "new old stock" battery for my T430. The Ebay seller had good feedback and a UK business address so I thought it would be genuine. I thought T430 batteries had a validation chip and that prevented fake batteries from working.

When it arrived, I found that the full charge capacity was less than 100% and it had 6 charging cycles. I also saw that the bar code shown by the power manager software was different from the one printed on the battery. Also, the printed barcoce numbers seem to be in a different font from my other thinkpad batteries. I read that the manufacturinbg date is part of the barcode - does anybody know how to work it out? The charge is also very erratic. It will be showing 80% full one minute then go to zero!

Does this sound like a fake battery or just one that hasn't been stored correctly> I emailed the seller but he hasn't got back to me yet.

Hello

Provide, please, the photo of the battery labels with quality enough to recognize the symbols on that. And show, please, the battery parameters from the Power Manager app (Advanced mode).

You are right, there is a chance the battery is a сounterfeit.

Re: Counterfeit T430 (70+) battery?

It's a faked battery with well done label.
1. According to the data on the label it has been produced in 2014, August and (!) 2012, February (encoded data). It's impossible, they must match.

2. The new battery controller isn't capable to provide its data to the system, Lenovo Settings app including. That's a cause you see the data of unknown battery - barcode, the 1st usage date etc. As the incorrect data are provided to the system, it's ACPI system can't manage the battery and laptop.

An old PM for win7 has exccellent feature - a battery reset. Probably it'd help to recognize new battery data, but I have a big doubt regarding this attempt as well the new battery quality itself.

Re: Counterfeit T430 (70+) battery?

Thanks

I have the old PM on my Windows 7 T410. That's where I noticed there was something wrong with the battey. The T430 has windows 10 and I tried the battery gauge reset but it went haywire! Can they fake the validation chip for the 70+? When did they switch from 55+ to 70+?  The markings on the fake battery look the same as the ones on the 55+. The later one that was supplied with the t430 has slightly different markings.

Re: Counterfeit T430 (70+) battery?

The battery chip isn't alone to perform HW authentication. There is also BIOS/EC image, signed and encrypted, it has appropriate algorithm. So, such battery "makers" with HW authentification features have a lot of difficulties to produce the exact analog.

70+/++ series has been announced in 2012, June.

Re: Counterfeit T430 (70+) battery?

Hi,
How can you know that encoded data in the barcode is 2012 February even though the info on the barcode is 2014 August? Please show me the way, I want to check my 2 batteries whether they are counterfeit. ( You can search for my post in W/P series Thinkpad Station section)
